South African football has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.

The tragic news was confirmed to local media by Adams’ representatives and his guardian, with his mentor Brendine Johnson speaking on behalf of the family. Mamelodi Sundowns were contacted regarding the matter but neither confirmed nor denied the reports, instead requesting that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.

A World Cup Campaign That Would Be His Last

Adams’ untimely passing comes just weeks after he represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Canada. The midfielder featured in all three of South Africa’s Group A matches but was an unused substitute in the knockout fixture against Canada.

He was among eight Mamelodi Sundowns players who represented the national team at the tournament. Following the World Cup, Adams and his Sundowns teammates had been granted an additional two weeks of leave before returning for pre-season. He had been expected to rejoin coach Miguel Cardoso’s squad next week during the club’s training camp in Austria.

A Rising Star Cut Down in His Prime

A product of the Stellenbosch FC academy, Adams signed his first professional contract in 2020 and went on to make 139 appearances for the Cape Winelands club—the second most in their history—before securing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with Stellenbosch, he helped the club win the 2023 Carling Knockout.

At Sundowns, Adams continued his success, winning the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League titles in less than two years. On the international stage, he was part of the Bafana squad that claimed a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. He made nine appearances for South Africa in total, scoring one goal.

Widely admired for his energy, technical ability and composure in midfield, Adams was regarded as one of the country’s most promising players.

Family in Shock: “Nobody Expected This”

Speaking on behalf of the Adams family, mentor Brendine Johnson described the devastating impact of the midfielder’s passing.

“At this moment, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now; they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone,” Johnson said. “This passing has ripped everybody apart. Returning from the World Cup just now, and then getting such news… I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive about returning after the World Cup and going forward.”

Johnson added that Adams had been excited about the future following a successful season: “Being a CAF champion, knowing what lies ahead, he was prepared. He doesn’t waste time away, being at home with his family. At this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected. Yes, I can tell you that he passed on. Nobody expected this”.

Cause of Death Unconfirmed

The cause of Adams’ death has not yet been made public. However, unconfirmed reports circulating on social media—cited by multiple African media outlets—suggest that the midfielder may have taken his own life. These reports remain unverified, and no official confirmation has been provided by the family, the club, or the South African Football Association.

Adams’ grandmother, Marianna Adams, passed away during Bafana Bafana’s World Cup campaign at the age of 72, just a day before South Africa faced Czechia in their Group A match in Atlanta.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across South African and African football as teammates, clubs and supporters come to terms with the loss of a player whose career appeared destined for even greater heights. Further details surrounding Adams’ death and funeral arrangements are expected to be released in due course.

The football community extends its heartfelt condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African national team, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.
