Security breach mars Inter Miami victory as fan tackle fells Messi in Puerto Rico

A dramatic pitch invasion in the final minutes of a friendly match briefly turned chaotic for soccer icon Lionel Messi, who was accidentally knocked to the ground by a security guard during Inter Miami CF’s 2-1 victory over Independiente del Valle on Thursday night.

The incident unfolded in the 88th minute at a stadium in Puerto Rico, where several spectators breached security and rushed onto the field. As the intruders attempted to approach players, one fan managed to reach the Argentine superstar and grab him from behind.

In the ensuing scuffle, a security officer tackling the pitch invader inadvertently collided with Messi, bringing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner to the turf. Despite the alarming nature of the incident, Messi was quickly back on his feet and appeared to be unharmed, showing composure as stadium security swiftly restored order.

The match itself served as a showcase for Messi’s enduring influence. Having entered the game as a halftime substitute, he secured the win for the MLS side by converting a decisive penalty kick in the 70th minute. The fixture had originally been scheduled for February 13 but was postponed due to a hamstring injury sustained by the captain.

Videos circulating on social media captured the moment of chaos, showing multiple fans evading stewards in an attempt to take selfies or touch the players. The breach has inevitably raised questions about perimeter security protocols at the venue.

While the incident provided a post-match talking point, Inter Miami will be relieved to have escaped without injury to their star player. The Herons will now shift their focus back to domestic preparations, with an upcoming fixture against Orlando City SC on the horizon as they build towards the new MLS season.
