As the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its dramatic conclusion, a new generation of footballing icons has rewritten the history books — and one of the game’s greatest strikers is watching with nothing but admiration.

Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário, whose 15 World Cup goals once stood as one of the sport’s most revered records, has now slipped to fourth place on the all-time scoring chart. Lionel Messi of Argentina leads the list with 21 goals, followed by France’s Kylian Mbappé with 20 and Germany’s Miroslav Klose with 16.

But if the man known simply as “O Fenômeno” is bothered, he isn’t showing it.

‘I’ve Lost the Emotion — Everyone Is Passing Me’

In an interview with CazéTV ahead of Norway’s quarter-final clash with England on July 12, Ronaldo addressed the changing of the guard with characteristic humour and grace.

“It’s turned into a free-for-all — everyone is passing me,” he joked. “I’ve lost the emotion already. But titles? They still have a long way to go to catch up on those.”

Ronaldo, who led Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002 with eight tournament goals — including two in the final against Germany — made it clear that his legacy extends beyond numbers on a spreadsheet.

“The guys who are passing me and putting up these incredible numbers are truly special — they deserve it,” he said. “Records are made to be broken. I don’t need to worry. As long as my goals remain in World Cup history, that’s all that matters”.

‘They Are on Another Level Entirely’

Ronaldo was lavish in his praise for both Messi and Mbappé, describing them as players operating in a different stratosphere.

“The numbers they’ve put up are completely dominant — they are on another level entirely,” he said.

The Brazilian icon also took time to celebrate the renaissance of the centre-forward position, singling out Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Mbappé for special mention.

“Not long ago, we were talking about a shortage of number nines in world football. Look at this beautiful turnaround,” Ronaldo reflected. “I feel very proud to have these guys as great representatives of centre-forwards. Mbappé too — he wears the number 10, but he’s a centre-forward”.

The Numbers Behind the Story

Ronaldo’s 15 goals came across 19 matches in four World Cups (1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006), with a remarkable 0.79 goals-per-game ratio. He was an unused member of Brazil’s 1994-winning squad before exploding onto the world stage four years later.

Messi, now 38, reached his record total across six World Cup appearances, having scored a hat-trick against Algeria to first surpass Ronaldo and equal Klose’s mark. He later became the outright leading scorer with his 18th and 19th goals.

Mbappé, 27, has reached 20 goals with electrifying speed. His record includes 10 goals in knockout-stage matches, surpassing the Brazilian duo of Ronaldo and Leonidas, who both had eight.

A Candid Assessment of Brazil’s Struggles

Beyond the individual records, Ronaldo offered a sobering assessment of Brazilian football’s current standing — particularly after the Seleção’s shock round-of-16 elimination at the hands of Norway.

“Our moment is very bad,” he admitted bluntly. “The semi-finals are almost all European teams. It’s going to be three Europeans and maybe Argentina, or four Europeans. We need to re-evaluate, humbly accept that we are below the standard and acknowledge our mistakes. From there, try to improve for the next cycles”.

His words carried added weight given the context: Norway, the team that eliminated Brazil, had just advanced to the semi-finals.

A Legacy That Endures

For all the talk of records being broken, Ronaldo’s place in football history remains secure. The man who scored twice in the 2002 World Cup final, who overcame career-threatening injuries to become one of the most devastating strikers the game has ever seen, views the changing of the guard not as a loss but as evidence of the sport’s evolution.

“Records are made to be broken, and the current ones will eventually be broken too,” he said. “With more World Cup matches in future editions, these records will naturally become less significant.”

As Messi and Mbappé continue their battle for World Cup immortality, one of the men they surpassed watches on with the perspective only a true legend can possess — proud of what he achieved, and genuinely thrilled for those who have surpassed him.
