Real Madrid snap up Cucurella for €50m in Mourinho’s first major move

---

The lightning-fast operation is a direct request from head coach José Mourinho, who personally identified the 27-year-old as the ideal player to reinforce the left flank as he begins his second spell at the club. According to reports, the Portuguese manager communicated his desire directly to the club’s sporting department.

A Swift and Surprising Operation

The move for Cucurella has concluded with remarkable speed. Just days after Mourinho’s reappointment was made official, Real Madrid outmaneuvered their rivals, including city neighbor Atlético Madrid, which had been negotiating for the player for weeks.

The verbal agreement covers all parties, and Cucurella has already accepted the contract presented to him. The transfer will be officially finalized after the defender completes his participation in the 2026 World Cup with the Spanish national team, after which he will travel to the Spanish capital to put pen to paper.

Reinforcing a Key Position

Mourinho’s request to strengthen the left side of defense stems from persistent doubts over current options on the roster. The 2025-26 season exposed vulnerabilities at left-back, with Álvaro Carreras suffering a drop in form and Ferland Mendy’s recurring fitness issues remaining a concern.

The signing of Cucurella, who would likely become the undisputed starter, signals a probable summer exit for some of the current left-backs, with Fran García expected to be the most likely to depart.

The Premier League & La Liga Pedigree

Cucurella, a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, returns to La Liga after a five-year spell away from Spain. His career took off after a permanent move from Getafe to Brighton before joining Chelsea for €65 million in 2022. He has since established himself as a key player for both the London club and the Spanish national team. With 24 caps for Spain, he offers Mourinho a blend of Premier League intensity and the tactical experience of a Spanish international.

A Broader Project

The Cucurella deal is the fourth major acquisition of Madrid’s ambitious summer, following the previously secured arrivals of Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries, and the imminent free transfer of Bernardo Silva.

For Chelsea, the sale of the €50 million-rated left-back represents a significant return on investment and provides capital as they restructure following a disastrous 2025-26 campaign that saw them finish without European football for the first time in decades.
