Former Porto and Inter Milan winger Ricardo Quaresma has launched a scathing attack on Portugal’s performance at the World Cup, declaring their campaign a complete failure from start to finish.
The 43-year-old, known for his outspoken nature, did not mince words as he dissected the national team’s disastrous tournament, which ended in a Round of 16 exit at the hands of Spain.
“Everything Went Wrong”
In an emotional post-match interview, Quaresma left no aspect of Portugal’s performance untouched. “Everything went wrong from start to finish in the World Cup,” he declared. “There wasn’t even a single match where we could say we played well, made good attacks, or were just unlucky.”
The former Sporting Lisbon star was particularly damning about Portugal’s display against Spain. “Even today, Spain controlled the game,” he said. “They dictated the tempo, they moved the ball with purpose, and we were chasing shadows for large parts of the match. It was painful to watch.”
Martinez Under Fire
Quaresma reserved his harshest criticism for manager Roberto Martinez, who took over from Fernando Santos in January 2023. The Belgian coach has now overseen two major tournaments without silverware, and Quaresma is running out of patience.
“I’m tired of saying this, but Roberto Martinez hasn’t impressed me at all since he arrived,” Quaresma fumed. “I can’t recall a single great match from Portugal since he came. That’s the reality. We’ve been waiting for something special, something that would make us believe, but it never came.”
The veteran winger claimed Martinez’s constant tactical experimentation had backfired spectacularly. “He tried 50 different tactics. None of them worked. He kept changing formations, changing personnel, but there was no consistency, no identity. The result? We’re heading home. Disappointment. It’s over.”
Hype vs. Reality
Quaresma also took aim at the pre-tournament narrative that this was Portugal’s greatest-ever generation. “Everyone was saying this team was the best in Portugal’s history, but in what way? What have they won?” he asked rhetorically.
“Having talented individuals doesn’t make you a great team. We have players winning Champions Leagues, playing for the biggest clubs in the world, but what does that mean when you can’t perform together? We’re going home with our heads down, and that’s the only thing that matters.”
Positional Failures
The former Inter Milan star broke down Portugal’s struggles across every department. “In midfield, we have great players, lots of talent, but they were very, very weak at this World Cup. The attack was the same, and the defence was lost.”
He questioned why a squad packed with Premier League and La Liga stars had looked so disjointed. “We had no shape, no structure. When you concede goals, you look at the defence, but the problems started further up the pitch. We weren’t pressing properly, we weren’t tracking runners, and when we had the ball, we had no ideas.”
“I’ll Say Things I’ll Regret”
As his frustration boiled over, Quaresma eventually pulled himself back from further controversy. “The best thing is that I stop here, otherwise I’ll say things I’ll regret later,” he concluded, leaving little doubt that there was even more venom left unsaid.
What’s Next for Portugal?
Portugal’s elimination raises serious questions about Martinez’s future, with many pundits already calling for his dismissal. The Portuguese Football Federation has remained silent on the matter, but with the next major tournament on the horizon, difficult decisions loom.
For now, Portuguese fans are left to wonder what might have been—and whether the golden generation will ever deliver on their immense promise.
Quaresma, who earned 80 caps for Portugal between 2003 and 2018, was part of the Euro 2016-winning squad and is considered one of the most naturally gifted players of his generation.
