President John Dramani Mahama has clarified that the ban on preaching in vehicles applies only to moving vehicles, not those that are parked or stationed.

The clarification follows public confusion over a recent directive on religious activities in commercial transport. The original announcement was widely interpreted as a blanket ban, sparking debate among religious groups, drivers, and transport operators.

In a statement on Saturday, President Mahama said the restriction is a road-safety measure aimed at preventing driver distraction and reducing accidents. “The ban is on preaching in moving vehicles. It does not apply to vehicles that are stationed,” he said.

He explained that drivers should not be distracted by loud preaching or audio recordings while actively operating a vehicle. Once a vehicle is parked at a bus terminal, lorry station, or roadside, religious activities may continue, provided they comply with local noise regulations.

Some commercial drivers welcomed the distinction, saying it makes the rule clearer and easier to enforce. Others called on the government to issue a formal legislative instrument to prevent law enforcement officers from misinterpreting the ban.

The controversy highlights the delicate balance between road safety, public order, and religious freedom in Ghana. President Mahama reiterated that the safety of passengers and other road users remains the priority.
