The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is embroiled in a bitter legal and financial dispute with former national team coach Vladimir Petković, who is demanding €5 million to agree to his departure following Algeria’s disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup.
The Bosnian-Swiss tactician was dismissed after Algeria’s 2-0 round-of-32 defeat to Switzerland—a result that laid bare the tactical shortcomings and collective weaknesses that had plagued the team since their elimination against Nigeria at AFCON 2025. The manner of the loss, combined with what critics described as a lack of playing identity, proved fatal to Petković’s position, with public anger and media pressure ultimately convincing federation leaders that a point of no return had been reached.
Contract Complication
The timing of the dismissal has created a legal nightmare for the FAF. Just days before the World Cup began, the federation’s Executive Board had officially extended Petković’s contract until July 2028, along with a salary increase. The new agreement reportedly raised his monthly salary to between €150,000 and €160,000.
The federation is now legally obligated to pay the full value of the remaining contract—approximately €5 million—unless a mutual agreement can be reached.
The Standoff
Petković is refusing to accept any reduced payout or compromise settlement. According to reports, the coach is demanding payment of his full salary through the end of his contract, which amounts to approximately €4.5 million.
The FAF, for its part, is seeking an amicable agreement and has proposed a severance package equivalent to five or six months of salary. However, Petković’s camp is digging in its heels, with the manager believing he has fulfilled his part of the contract and achieved the initial goals assigned to him.
FIFA Threat
Petković has threatened to take the case directly to FIFA if the contract is canceled without full payment. Sports lawyers believe he would have a virtually guaranteed winning case before world football’s governing body, given the binding nature of the newly signed contract.
The financial burden on the FAF is immense, coming at a time when the federation must also begin the costly process of rebuilding the national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
What’s Next
While internal discussions continue, the FAF has already begun scouting for Petković’s successor. Current Nigeria manager Eric Chelle has emerged as the federation’s top target, while the idea of appointing a local manager—such as former national team star Antar Yahia—has also been heavily discussed.
The standoff adds to the turmoil surrounding Algerian football, which has also seen captain Riyad Mahrez announce his international retirement following the World Cup exit. As one source close to the matter put it: “It is now impossible to continue like this. The public expects a clear break and an ambitious football project.”
For now, however, the FAF’s immediate priority is resolving a financial crisis that threatens to overshadow the federation’s efforts to turn the page on a disappointing World Cup campaign.
