’Mum, it was all worth it’: The untold story of Chari Pena’, the cleaner who became a World Cup champion

Behind every champion stands a story of sacrifice. For Spain midfielder Fabián Ruiz, that story begins with his mother, Chari Peña—a single parent who scrubbed dressing rooms and washed laundry so her son could chase a dream.

Chari Peña raised three children alone after separating from her husband when Fabián was just 12. Money was scarce. “We had a hard time financially,” Fabián later recalled. She worked relentlessly, often seven days a week, taking whatever jobs she could find to keep food on the table.

The turning point came when an eight-year-old Fabián joined Real Betis’s youth academy. The club didn’t just sign the boy—they offered his mother a lifeline.

“Me ofrecieron trabajo allí”

“They offered me work there,” Chari recalled. “Sometimes I was in the laundry, other times cleaning the dressing room. I started at seven in the morning and then had to take Fabián to train at four in the afternoon. When he went out to the pitch to train, I went out to watch him”.

Her days were a logistical marathon. To get to the stadium, the three siblings would ride on the back of their mother’s motorcycle. Fabián, who didn’t yet have a driver’s licence, would accompany her on those dawn departures. “I left with her at seven in the morning, I would fall asleep in the car until ten, when I had to train,” he remembered.

Often, he would sleep in the back seat of her car after training, waiting for her to finish cleaning the dressing rooms.

For 14 years—some reports say 15—Chari worked at Betis, scrubbing the very changing rooms where her son prepared for matches. “There are not many players who can say they have shared a dressing room with their mother,” Fabián later reflected.

“Al principio me daba un poco de vergüenza”

Initially, the arrangement brought embarrassment. “At first I was a little ashamed because she cleaned the Betis dressing rooms and I got changed there,” Fabián confessed.

But shame gave way to pride. “Afterwards, it was quite the opposite. I felt proud to see my mother working there and doing everything possible for us,” he said.

He later called his mother’s signing “one of the best signings of my career”.

“Todo mereció la pena”

When Spain lifted the World Cup, Fabián shared a photograph of himself embracing his mother, the golden trophy held between them. His caption was simple but devastating: “Mamá, todo mereció la pena”—“Mum, it was all worth it”.

“Fabián’s World Cup is his mother,” wrote Spanish journalist Alberto García Reyes. “That’s why the player took a photo with her and the trophy to summarise his life in the most difficult moment, which is always the one of success, not failure”.

A champion in her own right

Chari Peña has been called “the mop that won the World Cup”—a title that honours the invisible labour that built a champion.

Once Fabián could afford it, he told his mother to stop working. “At first it was hard for her, she thought about it for a long time. It was her routine, and leaving it all at once was difficult. Afterwards, she really enjoyed being able to come with me to Naples, to see me play, to be with me and my brothers”.

Behind every champion, there is often another. Chari Peña is a World Champion in her own way—not with a trophy in her hands, but with a mop in them, scrubbing floors so her son could walk on grass.
