The numbers are almost too absurd to print. Eight goals. Four assists. Twelve direct goal contributions. Thirty-three shots. Twenty-one chances created. Six big chances. Seventeen successful crosses. Fifteen through balls.
And a 47% walking rate.
As Argentina prepares for Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain, Lionel Messi is not just defying age at 39 – he is systematically dismantling every record in sight while moving less than almost anyone on the pitch.
The Goals
Messi’s eight goals have him level with Kylian Mbappé atop the Golden Boot standings, though he leads the tie-breaker with four assists to Mbappé’s three. He is the first player in history to score in nine consecutive World Cup matches, and the only player ever to score seven or more goals in multiple World Cup editions.
His hat-trick against Algeria in the tournament opener – the first of his World Cup career – took him past Miroslav Klose’s men’s record of 16 goals. He now has 21 career World Cup goals, extending his all-time record with every touch.
The Creation
But the goals are only half the story. Messi’s four assists have pushed him past Diego Maradona (8) to become the World Cup’s all-time leading assist provider. His combined attacking output – 33 shots and 21 chances created, totaling 54 actions – is the most by any player in a single World Cup since Diego Maradona’s iconic 1986 campaign.
He has created six big chances, completed 17 successful crosses, and played 15 through balls – all tournament-leading figures. His 12 goal contributions in knockout matches have surpassed Pelé’s long-standing record of 11.
The Walking Paradox
Perhaps the most remarkable detail is how Messi has achieved these numbers. According to FIFA tracking data, he has walked during 47% of the distance he has covered – the highest percentage of any outfield player in the tournament. He averages just 8.2 kilometers of running per 90 minutes, the lowest among all Argentina outfield players.
Yet the magic has not dimmed. Messi has simply adapted his game, conserving energy while positioning himself to strike at precisely the right moments. Against England in the semi-final, he didn’t score – but he provided both assists, including the 92nd-minute cross that sent Lautaro Martínez’s header past Jordan Pickford. It was his 14th career Player of the Match award at World Cups, an all-time record.
The Records Keep Falling
This is Messi’s sixth World Cup, matching the all-time record. He has now made 33 World Cup appearances – six more than Cristiano Ronaldo and the most in tournament history. His 21 goals and nine assists give him 30 total goal involvements, another all-time mark.
His eight goals in a single World Cup equal Guillermo Stábile’s long-standing Argentina record from 1930. And with one final to play, there is still time for more.
The Final Chapter
Spain awaits on July 19 at MetLife Stadium – a side that has already beaten France and knocked out the tournament hosts. But Messi has been here before. At 35, he led Argentina to glory in Qatar. At 39, he is doing it all over again – better.
“I don’t know how he does it,” Scaloni said after the semi-final. “None of us do. We just watch and enjoy.”
Whatever happens on Sunday, the numbers already tell an extraordinary story. At an age when most players have long since retired, Lionel Messi is not just competing – he is dominating. And he is doing it while walking half the time.
