History made in heartbreak: Senegal end 16-year drought with two knockouts goals, but Belgium steal victory in dramatic fashion

In a night of soaring highs and crushing lows at Seattle’s Lumen Field, Senegal carved their name into African football history—only to have their dreams shattered by one of the most remarkable comebacks the World Cup has ever witnessed.

The Teranga Lions became the first African team in 16 years to score two goals in a World Cup knockout match. The last side to achieve this feat was Ghana during their legendary run against the United States on June 26, 2010.

A Record-Breaking Night for Senegal

Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the 25th minute, tapping home after Ismaila Sarr’s header struck the post. At 22 years and 179 days old, Diarra became the youngest African player ever to score in a World Cup knockout match.

Then came the moment of magic. In the 51st minute, Sarr produced a moment of individual brilliance—controlling a long ball from Moussa Niakhaté with his chest before unleashing a thunderous volley past Thibaut Courtois. It was widely hailed as one of the goals of the tournament.

That strike was Sarr’s fifth World Cup goal, drawing him level with Cameroon legend Roger Milla on the all-time African scoring charts. He now stands just one behind Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan, Africa’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with six.

A Historic Drought Ended

Senegal’s two-goal haul carried profound historical weight. The Lions of Teranga had not scored a single knockout-stage goal since Henri Camara’s brace in the 2002 World Cup round of 16 against Sweden. That 24-year wait ended in spectacular fashion.

Moreover, Senegal’s nine goals at this summer’s tournament now represent more than any African nation has ever scored in a single World Cup.

Heartbreak in Seattle

Yet history will remember this night for Belgium’s astonishing rescue. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th minute, before Youri Tielemans headed home the equalizer in the 89th. Then, in the 125th minute, Tielemans converted a controversial VAR-awarded penalty to complete the comeback—the latest goal in World Cup history.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw reflected on the cruel twist: “It is a cruel loss, as we were good in the game. We had the advantage. We were leading 2-0. However a football match is not an 85-minute one”.

The Legacy Stands

Despite the exit, Senegal’s achievement is monumental. They have scored more goals than any African nation in a single World Cup. Sarr has joined African royalty with five World Cup goals. And they have ended a 16-year drought for African football in knockout-stage scoring.

The Lions of Teranga exit with their heads held high—their claws leaving an indelible mark on World Cup history.
