The High Court in Accra has delivered a decisive blow to the legal defence of Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, dismissing his challenge to a US extradition request. Security officers immediately rearrested Kumi following the ruling to facilitate the transfer process, bringing him closer to facing trial in the United States over an alleged $8 million romance scam targeting elderly victims.

The court’s decision affirmed an earlier extradition order granted by the Gbese District Court on March 27, which had cleared the path for Kumi to be sent to the US to face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. The High Court’s dismissal of the challenge effectively nullified the temporary reprieve Kumi had obtained through a preliminary legal objection.

Lawyer Vows Supreme Court Appeal

Reacting to the development, Kumi’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, confirmed the rearrest in a Facebook post, stating, “I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast-tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court.” The legal team has since signalled its intent to mount a final appeal at the country’s highest court, which would be the last domestic legal hurdle before extradition proceeds.

The Underlying Charges and District Court Ruling

The US government has accused Kumi of running a sophisticated romance fraud operation that netted approximately $8 million from vulnerable elderly individuals. In March, the Gbese District Court—presided over by Her Honour Anna Akosua Appiah Gottfried Anaafi Gyasi—had ruled that Kumi’s preliminary objections were overruled. Defence lawyers had argued that conspiracy and money laundering were not specifically listed as extraditable offences under the 1931 Extradition Treaty between Ghana and the United States, and further claimed the request was politically motivated. However, the judge held that both offences are explicitly covered under the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, rendering the objections legally invalid.

A Scramble for Bail and a Contentious Arrest

The extradition saga has been turbulent for Kumi. He had remained in custody since his initial arrest in December 2025, which was executed during a joint operation involving Ghanaian security agencies and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Prior to the High Court’s latest ruling, Kumi had finally secured bail—set at a staggering GH¢30 million with two sureties, both of whom were required to justify their standing with landed property. That bail has now been effectively superseded by the extradition order.

Human Rights Allegations Add Another Layer

In a parallel legal battle, Kumi is also pursuing a separate civil suit at the High Court, alleging gross violations of his constitutional rights during the arrest. In his suit, he accuses officers of the Narcotics Control Commission, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Attorney-General’s Department, and the FBI of subjecting him to torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment. He claims that during his arrest on December 11, 2025, he was kept in handcuffs from morning until late evening, systematically deprived of food, water, and rest, resulting in severe physical and psychological distress—a direct violation of Article 15 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

For now, Kumi remains in custody as the extradition machinery grinds forward. The impending Supreme Court appeal represents his final opportunity to block the transfer, as authorities on both sides of the Atlantic await the outcome of the legal showdown.
