From the Sahara to Stamford Bridge: The incredible family story behind Spain’s Euro 2024 hero Nico Williams

The journey of Athletic Bilbao and Spain winger Nico Williams to the pinnacle of European football is a remarkable tale of talent, perseverance, and profound family sacrifice.

The 23-year-old, who burst onto the scene with Athletic Bilbao in 2021 and played a starring role in Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, has revealed how his success is built on the foundation of his parents’ incredible journey. Their path to a new life in Spain included a surprising stop-off at one of the most famous stadiums in world football: Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.

In a recent interview, Williams opened up about the immense gratitude he feels for his family, whose story began far from the bright lights of La Liga and international finals.

A Journey of Hope

Williams’ parents made a life-altering decision to leave the Sahara, embarking on a perilous journey to Europe in search of a better future. They eventually settled in Pamplona, in Spain’s Basque Country, where Nico and his older brother, Iñaki (who also plays for Athletic Bilbao and Ghana), were born.

But before finding their feet in Spain, the family patriarch spent time in London, working to support his loved ones. In a detail that will fascinate football fans, Williams explained that his father worked as an electrician at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium.

“My dad worked as an electrician at Stamford Bridge,” Williams said. The revelation adds a unique layer to the family’s already extraordinary narrative, connecting their struggle to one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

A Debt of Gratitude

While the brothers have gone on to achieve football stardom, Nico Williams is quick to credit his parents’ unwavering support and hard work for everything he has accomplished.

“I’ve never lacked anything because my parents have always been there for me,” he stated, highlighting the secure and loving environment they managed to create despite the enormous challenges they overcame.

From the Sahara to a new life in Spain, via a worksite at Stamford Bridge, the Williams family story is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices that often lie behind sporting success. For Nico, now a Copa del Rey winner and a European champion with his country, his parents’ journey remains the most important foundation of all.
