Dembe’le’ takes on leadership role, urges Mbappe’ to increase defensive effort for France

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the dynamics within the French national team have shifted. Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé has emerged as a pivotal leader, reportedly using his close relationship with captain Kylian Mbappé to address tactical demands and raise collective standards.

According to a report by L’Équipe, the atmosphere within the French camp is one of unity and honest self-assessment, spearheaded by an unlikely source of authority. Ousmane Dembélé, long considered a mercurial talent, has grown into a mature and influential figure in the dressing rooms of both Paris Saint-Germain and Les Bleus .

It is this newfound influence that has reportedly allowed Dembélé to approach his longtime friend and national team captain, Kylian Mbappé, with a direct message regarding the team’s tactical requirements. Sources indicate that Dembélé has encouraged the Real Madrid superstar to increase his defensive work rate, a shift the winger views as essential for the team’s cohesion .

Rather than a source of tension, insiders describe the exchange as a testament to their strong mutual trust. The conversations between the two are said to oscillate between humor and serious determination, all aimed at strengthening the squad’s collective standards . According to L’Équipe, Dembélé emphasized that the captain’s role under Didier Deschamps requires more sacrifice out of possession than what is typically demanded at the club level .

The shift in the hierarchy was made visible during the team’s official World Cup photo session. Dembélé was seated to the immediate right of coach Didier Deschamps—a position previously occupied by veteran leaders like Antoine Griezmann, highlighting his elevation to a “spiritual leader” of the squad .

Dembélé arrives at the tournament at the peak of his career, having secured the 2025 Ballon d’Or and consecutive Champions League titles with PSG . His transformation is not just about trophies; it involves a tactical evolution under Luis Enrique at PSG, where he became a key component of high pressing and collective sacrifice—traits he now seeks to instill in the national team .

While Mbappé remains the offensive focal point and undisputed superstar, those close to the squad note that Dembélé’s rising status allows for a rebalancing of responsibilities. The veteran winger is not seeking to compete for the spotlight but aims to complement it, ensuring that the team is not overly dependent on its captain .

“We need everyone pulling in the same direction,” a sentiment attributed to the dressing room suggests. With Dembélé acting as a bridge between the talent and the tactical demands, France is banking on this matured dynamic to go one step further than their runner-up finish in 2022 and claim a third World Cup title .
