Carlos Queiroz has officially confirmed his departure as head coach of the Black Stars, bringing an end to a brief but transformative four-month tenure following Ghana’s Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician announced his decision in an emotional social media message on July 5, 2026, less than 24 hours after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

A Contract Cut Short by Fine Margins

Queiroz was appointed in April 2026 on a short-term, four-month contract designed to cover Ghana’s preparations for and participation in the World Cup. His initial deal was due to run until August, but the agreement contained a performance-based extension clause that would only trigger if the Black Stars reached the quarter-finals.

Although Queiroz guided Ghana beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010, the Round of 32 elimination meant the contractual target was not met. His overall record across five matches—including a pre-tournament friendly against Wales—stands at one win, two draws, and two defeats, with Ghana scoring three goals and conceding four.

A Campaign of Resilience

Taking charge with just 72 days before the tournament kicked off, Queiroz inherited a squad with minimal time for tactical integration. The Black Stars opened their World Cup campaign with a victory over Panama, earned a resolute goalless draw against England, and narrowly lost 2-1 to Croatia in the final group game. The four points secured were enough to see them progress to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

However, their lack of firepower proved costly against Colombia. A 14th-minute header from Jhon Arias—scored moments after influential defender Marvin Senaya was forced off with injury—settled the contest. Ghana failed to register a single shot on target, managing just four shots on target across their entire tournament—the lowest of any team.

“You Either Win or You Learn”

In his farewell message, Queiroz reflected on the lessons of the campaign with characteristic philosophical depth.

“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn,” he wrote.

“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions”.

The veteran coach, who previously led Portugal at the 2010 World Cup and Iran in 2018 and 2022, stressed that Ghana’s long-term success must be built off the pitch.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent”.

Gratitude and a Call for Reform

Queiroz thanked the Ghana Football Association leadership for entrusting him with the national team.

“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars”.

He reserved special praise for his players and technical staff.

“To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team”.

Addressing Ghanaian supporters, Queiroz acknowledged the disappointment of the World Cup exit but insisted the Black Stars had restored their standing on the international stage.

“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage”.

He concluded with a message of optimism: “Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future”.

What Lies Ahead

With Queiroz’s departure confirmed, the Ghana Football Association is expected to begin the search for a new head coach ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. French coach Hervé Renard has been tipped as a potential successor.

Queiroz’s brief tenure may have ended without silverware, but he leaves behind a restored sense of credibility and a clear roadmap for what Ghana must do to compete consistently on football’s greatest stage.
