Cape Verde President announces special tribute for Messi ahead of World Cup clash

In a gesture that has captured the attention of the footballing world, Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves has announced that his nation’s national team will present Lionel Messi with a special Cape Verde No.10 jersey ahead of their historic World Cup Round of 32 encounter against Argentina.

The announcement, made during a press conference in the capital city of Praia, comes as the island nation prepares for what many are calling the biggest match in Cape Verdean football history. The Blue Sharks, making their first-ever appearance in the knockout stages of a World Cup, are set to face the 2022 world champions in what promises to be a David-versus-Goliath showdown.

A Symbol of Respect

President Neves revealed that the commemorative jersey—bearing Messi’s name emblazoned across the back—will be presented to the Argentine captain during a pre-match ceremony at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde.

“Messi is a great player, he is highly respected in Cape Verde, for he is the best in the world,” President Neves stated. “He represents excellency and perfection in football. It is an honor to face him.”

The Cape Verdean leader emphasized that the gesture transcends mere sportsmanship, representing the profound admiration the West African archipelago holds for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“We will present him with a Cape Verde No.10 jersey bearing his name,” Neves continued. “It is our way of recognizing the best player in the world and acknowledging the inspiration he has provided to young footballers across our islands and throughout Africa.”

Historic Encounter

The upcoming match marks a significant milestone for Cape Verdean football. The nation, with a population of just over 500,000, has defied expectations to reach the knockout rounds, thrilling fans with their disciplined performances and attacking flair throughout the group stage.

For many Cape Verdean players, the opportunity to share the pitch with Messi represents the culmination of a lifelong dream. Several members of the squad grew up watching the Argentine maestro’s highlights and have cited him as a primary influence on their footballing journeys.

“The entire nation is proud of what our team has achieved, and we want to show the world that Cape Verde competes with heart and respect,” Neves added. “Whether we win or lose, this match will be a celebration of football and the unifying power of sport.”

Messi’s Legacy

The tribute comes as Messi continues to cement his legacy as one of football’s all-time greats. Having led Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022, the Inter Miami forward remains a central figure in the global game despite approaching the twilight of his illustrious career.

Cape Verde’s decision to honor Messi in such a public manner has been met with widespread approval from football fans across the continent, many of whom view the gesture as a testament to the universal respect the Argentine commands.

“We will never forget this moment,” President Neves concluded. “When future generations ask about the match that defined an era for Cape Verdean football, we will tell them about the day we stood shoulder to shoulder with the greatest.”

The presentation ceremony is scheduled to take place shortly before kickoff, with both teams expected to participate in the exchange as a symbol of mutual respect between the two nations.

Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM local time, with the world watching to see whether Cape Verde can produce one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history—or if Messi and his Argentine teammates will demonstrate exactly why they remain the team to beat on the global stage.
