Black Stars management committee members received $50,000 each as World Cup appearances fee — Moses Armah Parker reveals

Members of the Black Stars Management Committee each received $50,000 as appearance fees for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar – exactly half of what the players earned for the tournament, Medeama SC President Moses Armah Parker has disclosed.

In a revealing interview with Medeama FM, Armah Parker, who served on the committee at the tournament, provided rare insight into the compensation structure for the team’s management personnel during Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

“Members of the Black Stars Management Committee received only half of the players’ appearance fee, meaning each of us received $50,000. There was no per diem or winning bonus for the committee,” Armah Parker stated.

He further disclosed that the pastors who prayed for him and the Black Stars during the tournament were also given offerings from the same appearance fee received by him.

The Appearance Fee Structure

The players who represented Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar each received $100,000 as appearance fees , consistent with the amount paid at the 2014 tournament in Brazil. The $100,000 figure represented a significant increase from the $50,000 paid to players at Ghana’s first World Cup appearance in 2006 .

Armah Parker’s revelation confirms that the 2022 appearance fee budget extended beyond the playing squad. A leaked memo intercepted by Joy Sports had previously revealed that the Ghana Football Association budgeted for an additional 28 people to receive appearance fees, taking the total number of beneficiaries to 54 . The total appearance fee spend for Qatar 2022 amounted to $5.4 million .

Mixed Claims About Committee Compensation

However, Armah Parker’s claims appear to contradict statements made by some football officials in the aftermath of the tournament. Following Ghana’s group-stage exit in Qatar, Nana Oduro Sarfo, a member of the GFA Executive Council, had vehemently denied that any management committee member received appearance fees .

“Let me add this, no member of the management committee of the Black Stars took a dime, not even a pesewa as an appearance fee. The Ministry of Sports prior to the tournament said this time no appearance fee,” Oduro Sarfo told Kessben FM in December 2022 .

Per Diems and Bonuses – A Contested Issue

The issue of compensation for management committee members has been a matter of ongoing debate. Executive Council member Oduro Sarfo has consistently maintained that committee members are paid only per diems and qualification bonuses, not winning bonuses .

“What they take is when the team qualifies, they take qualification bonus and per diems. You can’t tell somebody to travel to Accra, Kumasi, Europe or anywhere, render a service and for the players alone to take per diems,” Oduro Sarfo explained in a 2025 interview .

In September 2025, Sports Minister Kofi Adams announced the cancellation of winning bonuses for members of the Black Stars Management Committee. The $10,000 winning bonus package previously allocated to committee members was scrapped, while players continue to receive $5,000 each for victories in World Cup qualifiers .

“If for every win we are to pay a winning bonus, what happens if we do not win the number of games to qualify us for the tournament? Under the previous arrangement, management team members received winning bonuses, but in the end, the team did not even qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations,” the Minister stated at a press briefing in Accra .

New Committee Structure

The Black Stars Management Committee has since undergone restructuring. Following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the GFA dissolved the previous committee led by Mark Addo and appointed a new six-member committee chaired by Dr. Randy Abbey .

The new committee includes former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah as Vice-Chairman, with Samuel Aboabire, Moses Armah Parker, and Richard Nsenkyire as members . The committee’s duties include overseeing team management, strategic planning, logistical support, and serving as a link between the technical team and the GFA .
