An Australian athlete has issued a public apology after continuing — and winning — her race at a Hyrox event in Beijing over the weekend despite experiencing an involuntary bowel movement during competition.

Joanna Wietrzyk, a 24-year-old from Melbourne, said she should have pulled off the track during the women’s 16-to-24 Hyrox event on Saturday. The athlete said she had not felt any symptoms before the race that might have warned her about what was to come.

The Apology

“I want to offer my sincere apology to the people of China, my fellow competitors, the spectators and the HYROX organizers for what happened during the race in Beijing,” Wietrzyk said in a statement on Thursday.

“I felt completely fit and healthy at the start of the race, with no reason to expect any illness. Looking back, I regret the decision to not have stepped off the track. I recognize that I should have made a different choice. I take responsibility for my decision to continue and am deeply sorry for the discomfort and disruption it caused.”

“I know my actions had an impact beyond myself, and I am genuinely sorry to everyone who was affected,” she continued. “I am learning from this experience and will carry those lessons with me, including remembering that there is more to life than racing and knowing when it is right to step away.”

Race Result Withdrawn

Wietrzyk’s time of 1:01:23 would have placed her atop her division, but she has asked to “retroactively withdraw” from the competition and forfeit the points she earned.

“On reflection, I have decided to retroactively withdraw from the race and forfeit the points I earned,” she said. “Thank you to those standing by me, both as an athlete and as a person, during this time, and to everyone who has reached out with kindness and support. It means more to me than I can properly express right now. I will be taking some time to recover, reflect and look after myself and my family away from the noise.”

Organizers Respond

Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste apologized for the incident on Sunday and said organizers should have intervened immediately.

“The health and well-being of our athletes is always our top priority,” Fürste said in a statement. “We should have acted sooner to remove the athlete from the course. We apologize for the distress this caused to everyone involved.”

What Is Hyrox?

Hyrox is a relatively new indoor fitness racing sport that combines running and performing high-intensity exercises at various workout stations. A typical Hyrox race consists of eight one-kilometre runs interspersed with eight functional workout stations, including:

· SkiErg
· Sled push
· Sled pull
· Burpee broad jumps
· Rowing
· Farmers carry
· Sandbag lunges
· Wall balls

The sport has grown rapidly since its founding in Germany in 2017 and now hosts events in cities around the world, including Beijing, London, New York and Sydney. It is not currently an Olympic sport, but its backers hope it could make the Games in 2032 or 2036.

What Is Involuntary Bowel Movement?

An involuntary bowel movement, also known as fecal incontinence, is the unintentional passing of stool from the body. It occurs when a person loses control over their bowel movements and is unable to hold stool until they reach a toilet.

Bowel control depends on a complex interaction between the muscles and nerves of the rectum and anus. The anal sphincter muscles — the internal and external sphincter — work together with pelvic floor muscles and nerves to hold stool in the rectum until it is convenient to release it.

When any part of this system is damaged, weakened or disrupted, involuntary bowel movements can occur.

Common causes include muscle damage from childbirth or surgery, nerve damage from conditions such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis, diarrhea, chronic constipation, age-related muscle weakness, and certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease.

Intense physical exertion, dehydration and gastrointestinal distress during endurance events can also trigger episodes in otherwise healthy athletes.

Public Reaction

The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many expressing sympathy for Wietrzyk while others questioned why she continued the race.

“Elite athletes push their bodies to the limit, and sometimes things go wrong. She deserves compassion, not ridicule,” one social media user wrote.

Others praised her decision to apologize and withdraw from the results. “It takes courage to own up to something like this publicly. She’s shown real character,” another user commented.

What’s Next

Wietrzyk said she will be taking time away from competition to recover and reflect with her family. It remains unclear whether she will compete in future Hyrox events.

Hyrox organizers said they are reviewing their protocols to ensure athletes receive appropriate support during competitions and that similar situations are handled more swiftly in the future.
