As Argentina prepare to step onto the MetLife Stadium pitch for Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain, they carry with them not just the weight of a title defence, but the staggering statistics of a five-year run that may never be repeated.
Since 2021, Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina have reached the final of every major tournament they have contested — four in total. They have won three. On Sunday, they aim to make it four from four.
The Streak That Defies Belief
Copa América 2021 — Brazil 0-1 Argentina
At the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, on the home turf of their fiercest rivals, Argentina ended a 28-year title drought. Ángel Di María’s first-half lob over Ederson secured a 1-0 victory that finally delivered Lionel Messi his first major international trophy in his 10th attempt. The 34-year-old captain, who scored four goals and provided five assists throughout the tournament, was named joint-best player alongside Neymar. For Argentina, it was a record-equalling 15th Copa América crown.
2022 World Cup — Argentina 3-3 France (4-2 pens)
In what many consider the greatest World Cup final ever played, Argentina ended a 36-year wait for global glory. Messi scored twice, Kylian Mbappé netted a hat-trick, and the match ebbed and flowed with extraordinary drama before Argentina prevailed on penalties. Messi became the first player in World Cup history to score in the group stage, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final of a single edition. He also set a record for most World Cup appearances (26) and most goal involvements (21).
Copa América 2024 — Argentina 1-0 Colombia (a.e.t.)
Defending their continental crown, Argentina secured a record 16th Copa América title. Despite losing Messi to an ankle injury, substitute Lautaro Martínez scored a 112th-minute extra-time winner at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
2026 World Cup — Argentina vs Spain (Sunday)
Argentina reached the final with a stunning 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semi-final. Trailing 1-0 until the 85th minute, Messi provided two late assists — first for Enzo Fernández, then for substitute Lautaro Martínez in the second minute of injury time — to shatter England’s hopes.
‘The Greatest Generation’?
What makes this run extraordinary is the calibre of opponents Argentina have faced in every final: Brazil on home soil, Italy as European champions, France in the most dramatic World Cup final in history, and now Spain — the most dominant team on the planet over the past three years. In none of those finals were Argentina considered clear favourites by analysts. In all of them, they found a way to compete, suffer, and win when it mattered most.
Argentina now hold the record for most official titles won by a men’s national team with 22. They have reached three World Cup finals in the last four editions — a feat unmatched in the modern era.
The Final Piece
On Sunday at MetLife Stadium, Scaloni’s men have the opportunity to close this historic cycle with a fourth consecutive title — a feat that would arguably crown this generation the greatest in Argentine football history, and quite possibly world football history.
“I think we can’t compare ourselves to anyone,” Scaloni said this week. “We just want to keep making history.”
Whether they win or lose on Sunday, Argentina’s run of four consecutive finals — three won, one to play — already stands as one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of international football.
Kick-off for the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.
