Ghana’s most capped footballer, André Ayew, has finally broken his silence on his controversial exclusion from the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, revealing that he chose to remain silent despite feeling wronged by several individuals within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the media.

The 36-year-old former captain made the revelation in a candid interview on the Mikel Obi Podcast hosted by former Nigeria international John Mikel Obi.

“I Was Playing Regularly”

Ayew, who joined Dutch Eredivisie side NAC Breda in February 2026 in a bid to revive his club career and secure a spot at the World Cup, expressed bewilderment at the selection decisions made by Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz. He made 17 appearances and scored one league goal for the Dutch side.

“I was playing regularly for NAC Breda, and I know some people were calling for me to be part. To be fair, some of the players who went to the World Cup, they didn’t have a lot of gametime in the season,” Ayew said on the podcast.

“People Did Me a Lot of Wrong”

Ayew, who holds the record for the most appearances for the Black Stars, acknowledged that his omission sparked significant public debate. However, he chose not to speak out publicly—a decision he says was driven by his deep love for Ghana.

“People said a lot of things. A lot of people in the [GFA, media and elsewhere] did me a lot of wrong. I felt it. But I did not say one word [because] I cannot spit on my country because of certain people. Ghana is more important,” Ayew stated.

A Legendary Career on the Line

Ayew’s omission from the 26-man squad for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada marked a significant turning point in a glittering international career that has spanned multiple World Cup cycles and continental campaigns.

He had hoped to become the first Ghanaian to play at four FIFA World Cups, having represented the Black Stars in 2010, 2014 and 2022. He remains the second-highest Ghanaian goalscorer at the World Cup with three goals, behind only Asamoah Gyan.

His brother, Jordan Ayew, was named captain and will lead the Black Stars in North America. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Mikel Obi Backs Ayew for Football Administration

During the podcast, Mikel Obi expressed his belief that Ayew could bring meaningful change to Ghana football if he eventually enters football administration. The podcast, which was recorded in Ghana, has since sparked widespread discussion about Ayew’s potential future role in the game.

Ayew’s club future remains uncertain. Following NAC Breda’s relegation from the Eredivisie, he was released by the club after making 16 appearances and scoring once during his short spell.

A Legacy Undiminished

Despite the pain of omission, Ayew’s commitment to Ghana remains unwavering. His decision to stay silent—even when he felt wronged—underscores the depth of his patriotism and his belief that the national interest transcends personal grievances.

For Ayew, one of Ghana’s greatest football exports, the national team may no longer be part of his immediate future. But his legacy as a Black Stars icon who chose country over personal pride is now firmly cemented.
