Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has launched a defiant defence of his World Cup tactics, insisting that—apart from Sir Alex Ferguson—no one in football has the standing to lecture him on coaching.

Speaking on the eve of Brazil’s Round of 16 clash against Norway, the veteran Italian brushed aside a wave of social-media criticism that followed his side’s unconvincing 2–1 comeback victory over Japan in the group stage. Late goals from Casemiro and Gabriel Martinelli spared the Seleção from an embarrassing defeat, but Ancelotti’s cautious, possession-heavy approach drew sharp backlash from pundits and fans alike.

Rather than tempering his response, the 66-year-old doubled down, pointing to a career that spans more than 1,400 competitive matches—a tally he believes only one man can surpass.

“The only person who has prepared more games than me is Alex Ferguson—he has over 2,000,” Ancelotti told Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. “I listen to everyone’s opinions, but the only one who could genuinely be the right person to give me advice is Alex Ferguson.”

The five-time Champions League winner then turned philosophical, quoting an old Italian saying to underscore his point. “In Italy, they say that all men want to be coaches and all women want to be architects,” he said. “I don’t know whether I truly understand football or not—but no one else can judge that about me.”

He acknowledged his own limitations with characteristic frankness: “I am one hundred per cent sure I am not a genius. But at the same time, I am one hundred per cent sure I am not a fool.”

Ancelotti emphasised that his longevity in the game is not a matter of luck but of resilience and adaptation. “The only certainty is that I have prepared for over 1,400 matches. That may not be enough to understand football in its entirety, but it is certainly a significant amount of experience.”

The comments mark a rare moment of public exasperation from a manager usually known for his calm, diplomatic demeanour. However, with Brazil now facing a dangerous Norway side spearheaded by Erling Haaland—who has already netted five times in the tournament—Ancelotti’s tactical choices will face their sternest test yet.

When asked how he plans to contain the Manchester City striker, Ancelotti dismissed the idea of a one-on-one solution, insisting that collective defensive organisation would be key. He also hinted that he would not deviate from his core philosophy, regardless of external noise.

“Criticism is part of the job,” he added. “But after 1,400 games, I think I’ve earned the right to trust what I see on the pitch.”

As Brazil chase their first World Cup title since 2002, the pressure on Ancelotti—who took over the national team only last year—is immense. Yet if his latest remarks are anything to go by, the veteran coach remains unshaken, confident in his methods, and unwilling to yield to the court of public opinion.

The only voice he would truly heed, he made clear, belongs to a 2,000-game legend sitting 5,000 miles away in Scotland.
