The 2026 FIFA World Cup is shaping up to be the most lucrative sporting event in history, with FIFA projecting total revenue of approximately $13 billion across the 2023–2026 commercial cycle—a 73% increase over the 8.9 billion** is expected to be generated during the tournament year alone.

Ticket sales and hospitality services are at the heart of this financial windfall, with FIFA expecting to collect nearly $3 billion from matchday revenue—more than three times the 3.1 billion**, representing a 226% jump.

The dramatic surge is driven by the tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams and from 64 to 104 matches, creating significantly more inventory for broadcasters, sponsors, and ticket sales. More than 500 million ticket applications have been submitted for just 7 million available seats, with packages sold in over 125 countries.

Broadcasting rights remain FIFA’s largest revenue source, projected at approximately 1.8 billion and $2.8 billion, with US-based corporations now accounting for 52% of FIFA’s sponsorship revenue tied to the 2026 tournament, up sharply from 36% in 2022.

The North American market—spanning the United States, Mexico, and Canada—has proven exceptionally lucrative. FIFA has embraced dynamic pricing, a system common in the US where ticket prices fluctuate based on demand. The most expensive ticket for the final at MetLife Stadium is listed at $10,990—nearly seven times the top price for the 2022 final in Qatar.

As a non-profit organisation, FIFA states that roughly 90% of its revenue will be redistributed or reinvested into football development, tournament operations, and prize funds for participating nations. The winners of the 2026 tournament will receive $50 million, with runners-up taking $33 million and group-stage exits guaranteed 1.5 million** in preparation funding.

While FIFA celebrates record revenues, criticism has mounted over soaring ticket prices and the financial burden placed on host cities. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola recently criticised FIFA for making the tournament “so expensive,” while US men’s national team forward Tim Weah warned that “real fans” would miss matches. Meanwhile, host cities are required to cover “safety, security and protection” costs, leading to friction in some jurisdictions.

Despite the controversies, the 2026 World Cup is already a financial triumph for FIFA—before a single ball has been kicked.
