White House directly contacted FIFA over Balogun red card — Governing body insists no political interference

In an extraordinary development that has sent shockwaves through the football world, the White House made a direct call to FIFA President Gianni Infantino requesting a review of United States striker Folarin Balogun’s controversial red card — a decision that ultimately led to the governing body suspending the automatic one-match ban just hours before the USMNT’s Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

The White House intervention, confirmed by multiple sources, came after Balogun was shown a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1. The 25-year-old forward, who leads the Americans with three goals in the tournament, was sent off in the 64th minute following a VAR review. Replays showed Balogun’s boot landing on the back of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle after an innocuous coming-together while contesting a looping ball. Brazilian referee Raphael Claus brandished the red card after being sent to the pitchside monitor.

Trump: ‘Reversing a Great Injustice’

President Donald Trump, who was awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize in December 2025, publicly thanked the governing body for the reversal.

“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he posted on Truth Social.

The President’s relationship with Infantino has drawn scrutiny, given the personal nature of their ties. Trump’s intervention came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio had publicly criticised the red card decision, telling reporters: “It was great. They got screwed with that red card. There needs to be an appeal process for that”.

FIFA’s Response: Article 27 and Independence

When approached for comment, FIFA referred to the findings of its independent disciplinary committee. The committee announced on Sunday that Balogun’s automatic one-match suspension would be “suspended for a probationary period of one year”.

The decision was grounded in Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which allows the judicial body to “fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure”. A FIFA statement clarified that if Balogun commits “another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced”.

FIFA sources insist that the White House had no influence on the final decision, pointing to Article 27’s provisions and the independent nature of the disciplinary panel. Multiple FIFA officials reportedly confirmed to The Athletic that the decision was made strictly in accordance with competition rules.

Pochettino’s Relief and Tournament Stakes

US head coach Mauricio Pochettino had been furious at the original decision, insisting the incident was “never a red card” and “not intentional”. Balogun, a former Arsenal academy product now at Monaco, has been in spectacular form throughout the tournament, registering at least one goal contribution in all three of his starts.

The USMNT now has an opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002 with a win against Belgium on Monday.

Precedent and Controversy

The decision mirrors a previous instance where Cristiano Ronaldo’s three-game ban in World Cup qualifiers was suspended under the same article. However, the timing — coming just hours before a crucial knockout match and following direct White House contact — has fuelled allegations of political interference.

Under FIFA regulations, red cards “automatically incur suspension from the subsequent match,” and typically, such suspensions cannot be appealed. The use of Article 27 in this instance has raised questions about consistency and the appearance of impropriety, even as FIFA maintains its disciplinary committee acted independently.

For Balogun and the USMNT, the decision is a reprieve. For FIFA, it is a test of credibility. And for the watching world, it is a stark reminder of how politics and sport continue to intersect — regardless of the rules on paper.
