Just three days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, one of the tournament’s most unlikely stars has offered his verdict on the showdown—and the generational battle within it.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, whose heroic performances in the United States turned him into a global sensation, appeared as a guest on CBS Mornings this Thursday to share his thoughts on Sunday’s heavyweight clash at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

A Fairytale Run Cut Short

Vozinha and the “Blue Sharks” arrived at the 2026 World Cup as first-time qualifiers in their history. What followed was nothing short of a fairytale. The 40-year-old shot-stopper, who had been playing in Portugal’s second division for Chaves with a Transfermarkt valuation of just €48,000, announced himself to the world with a stunning performance against Spain in the group stage—making seven saves to hold the tournament favourites to a 0-0 draw.

Cape Verde advanced to the knockout rounds before falling to Argentina in a 3-2 thriller. Despite the defeat, Vozinha earned the admiration of Lionel Messi himself, who embraced the goalkeeper after the match and told him: “You’ve done a good job, you’re an incredible goalkeeper, and your people must be very proud of you.”

“I Don’t Care Who Wins”

Now watching from the sidelines, Vozinha was asked for his prediction on the final—but the man who stood tall against both Spain and Argentina refused to pick a side.

“I don’t care who wins,” he admitted with a smile. “I just hope the best team wins so we have a great final.”

However, he did offer a tactical breakdown of the two finalists, drawing on his first-hand experience against both.

“Spain is the team in the tournament with the most possession. They love to control the game,” Vozinha observed. “Argentina, on the other hand, is a team that plays with a lot of heart.”

“Yamal Will Be the Future Messi”

But it was his assessment of the individual duel that truly captured attention—the clash between Lionel Messi and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

“These are the two best players in the world,” Vozinha declared. “Having Messi and Yamal together, two of the best in the world competing and playing against each other, I think we will see real magic and a wonderful battle, especially since both are left-footed.”

The Cape Verdean keeper went even further, anointing Yamal as the heir to football’s throne.

“I think Yamal is going to be the future Messi,” he said.

It is a bold prediction—but one that carries weight from a man who has shared the pitch with both legends and held his own against them.

From Obscurity to Global Fame

Vozinha’s rise has been one of the defining stories of this World Cup. Before the tournament, his Instagram following sat at roughly 50,000. After his heroics against Spain and Argentina, that number has exploded past 28 million—more than 50 times the population of his home nation of Cape Verde.

Now a free agent after his contract with Chaves expired on June 30, the 40-year-old is attracting interest from clubs around the world—including a potential move to Inter Miami, where he could become Messi’s teammate rather than his opponent.

A Final Worthy of the Occasion

As the world turns its eyes to New York on Sunday, Vozinha will be watching like the rest of us—but with a perspective few can claim.

He has faced both finalists. He has saved shots from both. And he has earned the respect of the man many consider the greatest of all time.

Now, he believes the world is in for something special.

“I just hope the best team wins,” he repeated—before adding with a knowing smile: “And I think we’re going to see real magic.”
