Ukrainian forces have escalated their campaign to sever Russian military supply lines, launching a wave of kamikaze drone strikes on convoys and secondary routes following the reported destruction of a critical bridge linking Donetsk city to the port of Mariupol, military officials and open-source analysts said on Thursday.
The bridge, believed to be a key artery for transporting ammunition, fuel, and heavy equipment to Russian units operating in southern Ukraine, was struck by Ukrainian precision-guided munitions earlier this week, according to multiple battlefield reports. While Russian authorities have not officially confirmed the bridge’s collapse, satellite imagery reviewed by independent conflict monitors shows visible damage to the structure and a halt in traffic flow.
In the aftermath, Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been observed targeting Russian military supply convoys attempting to reroute through unpaved secondary roads and adjacent villages, forcing Russian logistics units to take longer, more exposed paths. The Ukrainian General Staff, in a nightly operational update, noted “continued strikes on enemy command-and-supply nodes” but did not explicitly reference the bridge, citing operational security.
“If confirmed, this operation represents a significant tactical victory for Ukraine,” said Viktor Kovalenko, a military analyst at the National Institute for Strategic Studies in Kyiv. “The bridge was one of only two major crossings that allowed Russia to sustain its forces in the Mariupol axis. Disrupting it forces resupply to rely on slower, less secure routes, which are precisely where drones are now hunting.”
The reported strike is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to degrade Russian logistics ahead of anticipated autumn offensives. Over the past two months, Kyiv has intensified its use of long-range drones and HIMARS rockets to target ammunition depots, fuel storage facilities, and railway junctions deep behind the front line. Analysts say the campaign aims to reduce the intensity of Russian artillery fire and slow the pace of troop rotations.
Military bloggers and Ukrainian volunteer intelligence groups have circulated footage showing burning trucks and scattered equipment along routes east of the bridge, though these claims have not been independently verified. Russia’s Defense Ministry, in its daily briefing, reported repelling multiple drone attacks but did not address the bridge or convoy losses.
The bridge’s destruction, if confirmed, would echo Ukraine’s earlier successful strikes on the Kerch Strait bridge and other key crossing points in the south, which have forced Russian forces to rely on ferries and temporary pontoon crossings – all of which remain vulnerable to repeated Ukrainian attacks.
Western military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the campaign as “methodical and increasingly effective,” noting that Ukrainian drone operators are adapting to Russian electronic warfare countermeasures by using swarming tactics and altered flight paths.
On the ground, Russian troops in southern sectors have reported shortages of certain munitions and fuel, according to intercepted communications monitored by Ukrainian intelligence. While Moscow has downplayed such claims, the logistics strain could undermine Russia’s ability to mount sustained offensive operations in the coming weeks.
Ukraine’s presidential office declined to comment directly on the bridge operation but reiterated that “all legitimate military targets behind enemy lines are under constant surveillance and, when necessary, neutralized.”
As the campaign enters a new phase, Ukrainian forces appear to be shifting from singular high-value strikes to a persistent, grinding assault on Russia’s ability to move supplies – a tactic that military analysts say could prove decisive in shaping the war’s trajectory in the south. The full extent of the disruption is expected to become clearer in the coming days as satellite imagery and on-the-ground reports filter in.
