Spain stun Portugal with late Merino strike to end Ronaldo’s World Cup dream

Portugal thought they would dance with destiny, only to dance to a Spanish beat. The Iberian Derby, billed as Cristiano Ronaldo’s “last dance” on football’s grandest stage, ended in heartbreak for the Portuguese as Spain snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory in stoppage time to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

In front of 70,649 spectators at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, a match that promised fireworks delivered tension, frustration, and a dagger blow in the 91st minute. Substitute midfielder Mikel Merino, who had entered the pitch just minutes earlier, became Spain’s unlikely hero when fellow substitute Ferran Torres slipped the ball through the middle for the Arsenal man to unleash a powerful strike that rattled the Portuguese net.

The goal came as extra time loomed, crushing Portuguese hopes and sending the European champions into a quarter-final showdown against either the United States or Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday.

For 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who had confirmed on the eve of the encounter that this would be his final World Cup appearance, it was a sour farewell. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, jeered and cheered in equal measure throughout the night, was a marginal presence in the central attacking role he now occupies in the twilight of his career. His three goals in North America would not be enough to carry Portugal past their formidable neighbours.

Spain, who entered the match as one of the pre-tournament favourites having not conceded a single goal in four matches, extended that remarkable run to five games. Goalkeeper Unai Simon’s World Cup clean sheet record now stretches beyond 519 minutes.

The first half saw Spain dominate possession, with Mikel Oyarzabal squandering a golden opportunity inside 10 minutes when he pulled his shot wide with only goalkeeper Diogo Costa to beat. Portugal came closest when Nuno Mendes’ deflected strike struck the crossbar. Mendes was later forced off injured in the 56th minute, a significant blow to Portugal’s hopes.

Ronaldo had his first chance midway through the half, stinging the palms of Simon from a tight angle, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce in a cagey contest.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez made a series of attacking changes in the second half, but it was Spain’s Luis de la Fuente whose substitutions proved decisive. Merino, introduced alongside Fabian Ruiz in the 83rd minute, delivered the knockout punch with a composed finish that was out of keeping with much of what had gone on before.

As the final whistle sounded, Ronaldo cut a sombre figure—the man who had promised so much across six World Cup campaigns was left with nothing but shadows, tears, and a flight home. Portugal’s quest for a maiden world crown ended not with a bang, but with a Spanish conquistador’s strike in the dying embers of a Texas night.

Spain, meanwhile, march on. The curtain falls on Ronaldo’s World Cup journey, but for La Roja, the dream continues.
