Spain national team head coach Luis de la Fuente has waded into one of the most debated talking points of the international window, offering a staunch and unexpected defense of the referee who officiated the high-profile friendly between Argentina and Egypt.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference ahead of Spain’s upcoming fixture, de la Fuente was visibly bemused when a journalist raised the subject of the officiating in that match—a game that has sparked fierce debate across social media and punditry circles due to several penalty appeals and a contentious late offside call.

“I honestly don’t understand why you ask me about the controversy surrounding the referee in the Argentina vs. Egypt match,” de la Fuente said, tilting his head with genuine bewilderment. “Where did that even come from?”

The 64-year-old coach, known for his candid and often philosophical approach to the game, did not stop at simply dodging the question. Instead, he launched into an unprompted, full-throated endorsement of the unnamed official’s performance, directly challenging the prevailing narrative that the match was poorly managed.

“I watched the entire 90 minutes with my own eyes, and I thought the referee got everything absolutely right,” de la Fuente asserted, his tone firm and dismissive of the uproar. “Every decision he made—from the physical challenges in the midfield to the appeals for handballs in the box—was spot on. He read the game with clarity and didn’t fall for simulation. In an era where we spend too much time dissecting every frame of video, we forget that refereeing is an art of interpretation. This official interpreted the game masterfully.”

De la Fuente went a step further, offering an olive branch to the often-criticized officiating community. “I’d actually like to congratulate him,” he continued. “Because going into a cauldron like that—with the weight of two passionate national teams and a global audience—and maintaining that level of composure and accuracy is not easy. He controlled the tempo without becoming the protagonist. We need more of that, not less.”

The remarks are particularly striking given that de la Fuente has no tactical stake in the match in question. Spain are not scheduled to face either Argentina or Egypt in the near future, leading many to speculate that the manager was using the platform to make a broader point about the growing culture of referee criticism in modern football.

While the Argentina-Egypt clash ended with minimal major incidents on the scoreboard, several slow-motion replays circulated online showing robust tackles that some fans argued warranted stricter punishment. However, de la Fuente dismissed those interpretations as overreactions fueled by high-definition replays rather than the reality of the game’s flow.

“We are losing the essence of football,” he added. “We want the referee to be invisible, but then we dissect his every move under a microscope. That is a contradiction. Tonight, that official was invisible in the best way possible—because he got it right. I stand by that.”

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has not issued an official statement on de la Fuente’s comments, but those close to the coaching staff suggest his outburst was a calculated move to support referees ahead of Spain’s own high-stakes matches, where contentious decisions are expected.

Social media, however, erupted in mixed reactions following the press conference. While some praised de la Fuente for his integrity and refusal to jump on the bandwagon of outrage, others accused him of being deliberately contrarian, pointing to at least two instances in the match where VAR intervention was notably absent.

Regardless of the validity of the criticism, de la Fuente made it abundantly clear that in his eyes, the official in question deserved nothing but praise—a rare moment of unity in a sport increasingly divided by the margins of error.
