Scaloni plays down semi-final opponent talk: “It doesn’t matter if it is England or Norway” — Fitness now the priority

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has refused to be drawn into speculation over his side’s potential semi-final opponents, insisting that the identity of their next rival is secondary to the immediate challenge of recovering physically from a draining quarter-final war.

Speaking in the early hours of Monday morning following Argentina’s penalty shootout escape against Ecuador, a visibly exhausted but composed Scaloni addressed the media with characteristic pragmatism. While fans and pundits alike have already begun dissecting the contrasting styles of England and Norway—who face off in the other quarter-final later this week—the Albiceleste boss made it abundantly clear where his focus lies.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s England or Norway,” Scaloni stated flatly, brushing aside a question about which opponent would suit his team better. “We’ll be facing a team that plays very good football and has a great coach. Either way, it’s a semi-final of a World Cup. There are no easy games at this stage. We respect both equally, and we’ll prepare for whoever comes.”

The 48-year-old tactician, who has masterminded Argentina’s transformation into a trophy-winning machine, acknowledged that his squad had been pushed to its absolute limit. After conceding a late equalizer and enduring 30 nerve-jangling minutes of extra time before prevailing in the shootout, several key players were seen cramping and limping through the final exchanges. The toll, Scaloni admitted, is now the single most pressing concern.

“Now we need to recover our fitness, because that’s the most important thing right now,” he emphasized, his tone shifting from diplomatic to urgent. “We gave everything out there—mentally and physically. The lads left their legs on the pitch. We have a short turnaround before the semi-final, and we have to manage every minute of recovery carefully. Training loads, sleep, nutrition, treatment for knocks—that’s what occupies my mind at this moment, not the opponent’s formation or tactics.”

Scaloni confirmed that the medical staff would conduct thorough assessments on several starters, including midfielder Rodrigo De Paul and defender Cristian Romero, both of whom appeared to struggle with muscle fatigue in the latter stages. The coach also hinted at possible rotation in training sessions to preserve legs, though he stopped short of revealing any lineup changes.

“We have a deep squad, and we trust every player who wears this shirt,” Scaloni added. “But we also know that playing 120 minutes and then a shootout takes a unique kind of toll. We’ll use every tool available—ice baths, recovery sessions, psychological support—to get the group ready. If we’re not at 100 percent fitness, our football won’t flow. That’s the reality.”

On the pitch, Argentina’s performance was far from their fluent best. After taking an early lead, they struggled to impose their trademark possession game as Ecuador grew in confidence. Scaloni, however, defended his team’s display, pointing to the resilience shown in the face of adversity.

“We suffered, yes, but we never lost our shape or our belief,” he said. “That’s what champions do—they find a way when things aren’t perfect. The boys showed character, and I’m proud of that. Now we have to recover and do it all over again.”

With England and Norway set to battle it out for the right to face Argentina, Scaloni’s message to his squad is unambiguous: rest, regenerate, and then refocus. The identity of the semi-final opponent can wait. For now, the race against time to restore his warriors’ legs is the only race that matters.
