Ronald Koeman has parted ways with the Netherlands national team, bringing an end to his second stint in charge of the Oranje following their painful round-of-32 elimination from the 2026 World Cup at the hands of Morocco.

The 63-year-old manager’s decision comes after a penalty shootout defeat at Monterrey Stadium, which marked the Netherlands’ earliest World Cup exit in two decades. Koeman had refused to confirm his resignation immediately after the match, stating he needed time to reflect. “No, I haven’t,” he said when asked if he had already submitted his resignation. “I’m going to reflect on my future. This is straight after a game and the disappointment is so fresh in your mind.”

However, with his contract expiring this summer and mounting pressure from both fans and pundits, Koeman has ultimately decided to step away.

A Damning Record Against Football’s Elite

Koeman’s departure caps an underwhelming second tenure that began in 2023. Perhaps the most telling statistic of his reign is the Netherlands’ complete inability to compete with the world’s best. Since taking charge, the Oranje faced nations ranked in the FIFA top 25 on 14 occasions — and failed to win a single match. Their record reads six draws and eight defeats, a run that includes a 4-0 thrashing by France in March 2023 and a goalless draw against the same opposition in June 2024.

Despite reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2024, the Dutch never managed to beat a top-25 nation under Koeman’s leadership.

Tactical Criticism and Defiant Defence

The final straw came against Morocco, where Koeman’s decision to deploy a five-man defence drew sharp criticism from pundits who accused him of abandoning the traditional “Dutch school” of attacking football. The Netherlands managed just two shots on target across 120 minutes of play.

Koeman, however, remained defiant in his post-match press conference, standing by his tactical approach. “If I had to do it again I’d do it all the same way,” he insisted. “As the Dutch coach when the equaliser is scored I am always going to be scolded for the fact I chose five defenders. But you criticise, which is your right. You watch from the sidelines, I’m here with the team.”

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi admitted surprise at the approach, stating: “We were taken aback by their formation. When we saw it we knew they wanted to defend in a low block.”

What Next for the Oranje?

Koeman’s exit marks the end of an era for the Dutch national team. His departure is expected to trigger a broader overhaul, with speculation mounting that captain Virgil van Dijk — who has 96 caps — may also retire from international duty. Former Oranje midfielder Ronald de Boer told talkSPORT he believes the changes are inevitable: “We need a new fire in this Dutch team and starting with the coach, I think that will happen.”

Koeman previously managed the Netherlands from February 2018 before leaving abruptly in August 2020 to take over at Barcelona. His second spell, which ends in disappointment, leaves the KNVB searching for a new leader capable of restoring the Oranje’s status among football’s elite.
