Real Madrid’s 2026-27 La Liga season opener against Real Sociedad has been officially postponed, with the club guaranteed to have at least one player competing in the World Cup semi-finals, The Athletic has confirmed.

The match, originally scheduled for the weekend of August 15-16 at the Santiago Bernabéu, will now be pushed back to a midweek slot later in August—likely August 26—to allow World Cup participants adequate rest and pre-season preparation.

Quarter-Final Clash Guarantees Madrid Representation

The postponement was triggered by Wednesday’s World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco, a match featuring four Real Madrid players on opposing sides.

France’s squad includes Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and new signing Ibrahima Konaté (27), while Morocco is led by Brahim Díaz. With one of these two nations guaranteed to reach the semi-finals, Real Madrid is assured of having at least one player still competing in the tournament’s latter stages.

Other Madrid players still alive in the World Cup include Marc Cucurella, Jude Bellingham, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois (Belgium).

Player Welfare Agreement Triggers Reshuffle

La Liga president Javier Tebas confirmed the league would honour the AFE (Spanish footballers’ union) collective agreement, which guarantees players three weeks of rest following their final World Cup appearance, plus an additional three weeks of preparation before returning to competitive action.

“All players will get three weeks of rest, from their last game at the World Cup, and three weeks of preparation,” Tebas stated. “We can divide the first gameweek into six games until August 14 and another three or four midweek (later) in August, between gameweek two and three.”

The World Cup concludes on July 19, making it impossible for finalists to recover in time for an August 15-16 league start.

Widespread Impact Across La Liga

Up to 12 clubs could see their opening fixtures postponed, with as many as six matches potentially affected.

· Atlético Madrid has 11 players still competing, including Argentina’s Julián Álvarez, Nahuel Molina, and Giuliano Simeone, plus Spain’s Marcos Llorente and Norway’s Alexander Sørloth.
· Barcelona has 10 players involved, including Spain’s Pedri, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, and France’s Jules Koundé.
· Athletic Bilbao has Spanish internationals Unai Simón, Aymeric Laporte, and Nico Williams.
· Real Betis and Sevilla are also monitoring the Argentina-Switzerland quarter-final, which will determine whether their players Giovani Lo Celso, Rubén Vargas, and Djibril Sow reach the semis.

The Premier League has largely avoided this issue by delaying its 2026-27 season start to August 22-23.

Mourinho’s Return Delayed

The postponement means José Mourinho—who officially returned to Real Madrid on June 11—will now make his competitive debut not at home against Real Sociedad, but away to Espanyol on the weekend of August 22-23.

Mourinho begins pre-season training on July 13 at Valdebebas with 11 first-team players, though several World Cup participants will join later.

What Happens Next

The postponed fixtures will be rescheduled in a midweek slot between the second and third rounds of the season. La Liga plans to split the opening round: most matches will proceed on August 14-16, while affected games—including Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad—will be played later in the month.

An official revised schedule is expected once the World Cup semi-finalists are confirmed.
