Real Madrid have performed a dramatic U-turn on their pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Rodri, with newly appointed manager José Mourinho successfully convincing the club to make a move for the Spain international once the World Cup concludes.
According to journalist Sergio Valentín, Mourinho requested the signing of a midfielder with a different profile to the options currently available in his squad. The club’s hierarchy has approved the request and informed the Portuguese coach that they will formally move for the 30-year-old after Sunday’s final.
Why the Change of Heart?
Until recently, Real Madrid’s recruitment team had reservations about committing to such an expensive deal. Concerns over Rodri’s age, injury record—particularly a serious knee issue that hampered his season at Manchester City—and the significant transfer fee had previously pushed the move into the background.
However, several factors have now shifted the landscape:
· Contract situation: Rodri is now in the final year of his Manchester City contract, which expires in June 2027. City have offered a new deal, but negotiations have stalled. Real Madrid believe this makes the conditions for a deal considerably more favourable.
· World Cup form: Rodri has been outstanding at the 2026 World Cup, captaining Spain to Sunday’s final against Argentina. His performances have only solidified his reputation as one of the world’s best midfielders.
· Tactical need: Since the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić, Real Madrid have lacked a midfielder capable of dictating tempo and controlling possession. While Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Federico Valverde offer energy and athleticism, none naturally orchestrate play in the way Kroos did. Mourinho believes Rodri is exactly the profile the club has been missing.
Rodri Keen on Move
The player himself is reportedly open to a move to the Santiago Bernabéu. Rodri has previously expressed admiration for the club and a desire to wear the white shirt. A return to La Liga appeals to the Madrid-born midfielder, who has been regularly linked with the Bernabéu in recent transfer windows.
Mixed Reports
Not all sources are in agreement. Marca reports that Real Madrid have not made any approach to Rodri or his entourage and that the club remains calm, believing most summer transfer business is already complete. President Florentino Pérez is said to have valid concerns about the operation, including the €70 million price tag for a player approaching his thirties with just one year left on his deal.
Nevertheless, Valentín’s information suggests the club has now approved Mourinho’s request and will explore a move once the World Cup concludes.
What Comes Next
Rodri has stated he will settle his club future after the World Cup final. He is expected to meet with Manchester City’s sporting director Hugo Viana and manager Enzo Maresca following the tournament.
For now, all eyes are on Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium, where Rodri will captain Spain against Argentina. After that, the real negotiations begin.
