The incendiary comments, which were widely condemned, came after Mbappé appeared to snub Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill’s attempt to shake hands at the final whistle.
Amarilla, a member of Paraguay’s populist PLRA party, took to X (formerly Twitter) to launch a vitriolic attack on the French forward. She wrote: “This brute hasn’t even learned to write. Instead of breastmilk, he grew up sucking on coconuts, and the most educated creatures he ever heard were chimpanzees”.
The senator continued her assault by directly addressing Gill: “You should’ve given him the middle finger, Orlando Gill. A colonized Cameroonian, pretending to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant, and ugly”.
Amarilla also dismissed Mbappé’s performance on the pitch, claiming: “He was nervous and scared to death all game, like his whole team. They didn’t even manage to score a single goal, until they got lucky with a penalty”.
Perhaps most disturbingly, the senator called for physical violence against the player, stating: “The only thing many of us blame the team for is not giving him a full-handed slap at the end of the game”. She added: “I’m not even a football fan”.
The remarks have been met with widespread outrage, with French media outlets, including RMC Sport, describing the senator’s behavior as “catastrophic” and reporting that she “completely lost it” on social media. The comments have been condemned as racist and shocking, drawing comparisons to pre-match tensions stoked by Paraguayan legend José Luis Chilavert, who had earlier labeled France an “African team”.
As of now, neither Mbappé nor the French Football Federation have issued an official response to Amarilla’s comments. The controversy continues to dominate headlines, overshadowing what was a hard-fought victory for the French side.
