The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, is leading a joint delegation of party officials and civil society representatives to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters today to finalise the route and modalities for Thursday’s planned ‘Save Our Judiciary’ demonstration.

The protest, scheduled for August 6, 2026, is the culmination of weeks of mounting political tension following the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge former MASLOC CEO Sedina Attionu-Tamakloe . The NPP has framed the demonstration—dubbed “Democracy Under Attack”—as a defence of Ghana’s democratic institutions, constitutional order, and the rule of law .

Demonstration Details

According to party communications, the protest is set to commence at 6:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court in Accra and conclude at Jubilee House . The party has launched a parallel online campaign, mobilising supporters under the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow, and #SayNoToStateCapture .

Speaking at a press conference announcing the protest, Nana Boakye declared: “The time for silence is over. The New Patriotic Party hereby serves notice that on the 6th of August, in collaboration with other political parties, civil society organisations, professional bodies, student movements, youth movements and all well-meaning citizens, we shall embark on a massive demonstration to defend our democracy” .

Triggering Controversy

The planned protest follows the Court of Appeal’s ruling overturning a 10-year prison sentence handed to Sedina Attionu-Tamakloe in April 2024 . The former MASLOC CEO had been convicted on 78 counts, including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering . The appellate court acquitted her after ruling that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt .

The NPP has been highly critical of the Attorney-General’s handling of the appeal, alleging that the state did not mount a strong enough defence before the appellate court . Party officials have also pointed to a string of what they describe as grievances driving the protest, including the arrests of opposition figures and government critics, charges over alleged insults, detention of TikTok users and journalists, and what they term the “weaponisation of bail conditions” .

Political Context

The demonstration comes at a tense moment in Ghanaian politics. Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an NPP communications team member and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the Executive of becoming too closely aligned with the Judiciary—a situation he described as a threat to the democratic principles Ghana’s founders fought to establish .

“Try as you may, you can never suppress the will of the people,” Aboagye said in a social media post .

Government officials have consistently denied targeting political opponents, maintaining that arrests and prosecutions follow due process and that law enforcement and the judiciary operate independently .

Opposition Within

However, not all voices within the political establishment support the demonstration. Former Gomoa West MP Alexander Abban has opposed the protest, arguing that disagreements with court decisions should be addressed through legal avenues rather than street actions .

“I disagree. Let us deal with it as a matter of law,” Abban said in an interview. “When we go on that demonstration, we are actually fueling the perception that the lady has been freed because she’s a politically exposed person” .

Today’s Police Meeting

Today’s meeting at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters is expected to be a standard pre-protest engagement, similar to previous arrangements where police and organisers agree on routes, start times, and security protocols . The meeting is seen as crucial to ensuring the demonstration proceeds without incident.

Nana Boakye, who recently declared his intention to contest for the position of NPP National First Vice Chairman in the party’s upcoming elections, is leading the delegation . He has previously emphasised that the party will deploy lawful means to protect its members and supporters during political activities .

The demonstration will first be held in Accra before being replicated in other regions across the country at later dates .
