In the midst of a ticket frenzy that has seen World Cup final seats resell for tens of thousands of dollars, Lionel Messi has delivered an extraordinary act of kindness off the pitch—personally arranging four tickets for the family of Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Vozinha to attend the showpiece final at MetLife Stadium.
The gesture
According to Argentine journalist Yanina Latorre, Messi personally facilitated the tickets, ensuring that Vozinha’s mother, wife, and two young children could experience football’s greatest spectacle from the stands. The tickets were for multiple matches, with the final being the centrepiece. In a market where securing even a single seat is a “monumental challenge,” finding four adjacent spots for an entire family is almost impossible. Messi made it happen.
Why Vozinha’s family couldn’t afford to attend
For Vozinha, the 40-year-old shot-stopper who became one of the tournament’s breakout stars, the financial reality was crushing. Despite a professional career in Portugal, his earnings were modest—just a few thousand dollars—while ticket prices on the secondary market had soared to “tens of thousands of dollars”.
This was compounded by earlier visa complications that had already prevented his family from attending Cape Verde’s historic run. When they finally had the chance to see him on the biggest stage, the cost of entry was simply beyond reach.
A gesture of respect between rivals
The connection between the two players was forged on the pitch. In Argentina’s Round of 32 clash against Cape Verde—the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout stages—Vozinha produced a heroic performance, making eight saves and denying Messi on multiple occasions. After the match, Messi walked over to congratulate the goalkeeper, telling him he was “a great goalkeeper and the people of Cape Verde should be proud of him”.
“Messi once again showed his great heart”
The news has been met with widespread admiration. Mexican newspaper Excelsior wrote that “Messi once again showed his great heart”. Vietnamese outlet Tien Phong described the gesture as an “assist” in real life—one that has nothing to do with football but everything to do with humanity.
Social media has been flooded with praise. “On the pitch, he is always one of the best players in the world. Off the pitch, Messi once again shows he is a wonderful human being,” one fan commented.
“A reminder of what football is really about”
For Vozinha, who had never hidden his admiration for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, the gift is deeply personal. But the story resonates far beyond one family. With tickets for the final changing hands for up to $2.3 million on resale sites, Messi’s intervention serves as a reminder that football’s greatest value lies not in trophies, but in humanity and sharing.
