In a move that has sent shockwaves through the football world, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced on Sunday that Balogun’s automatic one-match ban would be suspended for a probationary period of one year. The decision, which came on the eve of the USMNT’s round of 16 clash against Belgium, has drawn fierce criticism from fans, pundits and officials across the globe.
Balogun, 25, was shown a straight red card during the USMNT’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina for a foul on Tarik Muharemović after a VAR review. Under FIFA’s regulations, a direct red card automatically triggers a one-match ban which cannot be appealed.
However, reports emerged that President Donald Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the night of the match to request a review of the suspension. Sources confirmed to multiple outlets that Trump spoke with Infantino and suggested reviewing the decision. The reversal is believed to be the first time since 1962 that FIFA has allowed a player to appear in a World Cup match despite being suspended.
Klopp: “This is our game, not theirs”
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, now serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer and the leading candidate to become Germany’s next head coach, delivered a scathing assessment during his role as a World Cup pundit for MagentaTV.
“If that really was the case, then that’s crazy,” Klopp said. “Let’s just say: this is our game, not theirs. These two people, who both have no idea about football, should have nothing to do with that”.
Addressing the incident itself, Klopp was unequivocal: “That was a red card, there’s no two ways about it. We’re sorry for Balogun because he didn’t mean to do it, but that’s what the rules say”.
“If Trump and Infantino really worked this all out between themselves, that’s crazy. It calls everything into question,” Klopp added.
Widespread backlash
The decision has provoked angry responses from across the football establishment. Norway manager Ståle Solbakken warned FIFA had set a “dangerous precedent”. “He got a red card, VAR concluded that it was red. Then you’re suspended,” Solbakken said. “What about the next red card? Is there a committee somewhere that will take it away? It’s a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad decision that is hurting the World Cup”.
England manager Thomas Tuchel questioned the process: “Who overturns this decision then and when? And on what grounds? … We just want to have consistency in the decisions”.
The Royal Belgian Football Association said it was “astonished”, while Belgium coach Rudi Garcia mocked: “I didn’t know that in the offices of FIFA the fifth of July was the first of April in Europe”.
UEFA issued a strongly worded statement: “When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined”.
The rule and Trump’s reaction
While FIFA’s regulations state a red card automatically triggers a non-appealable one-match ban, a little-known clause in the FIFA statutes allows the governing body to “fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure”. This same rule was previously used to overturn a three-game suspension for Cristiano Ronaldo before the tournament.
Trump, who was the inaugural recipient of the newly created FIFA Peace Prize, celebrated the decision on Truth Social: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”.
German FA president Bernd Neuendorf demanded an explanation, stating: “The impression that there was active political interference in the sport must be swiftly and conclusively dispelled. It is a matter of the integrity of the competition and the credibility of FIFA”.
The controversy may not be over, as FIFA has reportedly granted Belgium permission to appeal the ruling.
