In one of the most intriguing storylines of the summer transfer window, Inter Miami are in advanced talks to sign Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias – better known as Vozinha – just days after the 40-year-old shot-stopper faced Lionel Messi at the World Cup.
According to reports from MARCA and Portugal’s Record, David Beckham’s franchise is pushing to secure the veteran on a free transfer after his contract with Portuguese side G.D. Chaves expired on June 30, 2026.
From Opponent to Teammate
The proposed move carries a poetic symmetry. On July 3, Vozinha produced a heroic performance against Argentina in the World Cup Round of 32, making eight saves – including several crucial denials of Messi himself – before Cape Verde ultimately fell 3-2 after extra time. Now, barely a week later, he could be sharing a dressing room with the very man he almost eliminated from the tournament.
A World Cup Fairy Tale
Vozinha’s journey to global prominence is the stuff of sporting legend. At 40 years and 12 days, he became the oldest player ever to appear in a nation’s debut World Cup match. Against Spain in the group stage, he produced seven saves to secure a shock 0-0 draw against the 2010 champions, earning Man of the Match honours. He followed that with clean sheets against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, keeping two clean sheets in the tournament – joining England’s Peter Shilton and Italy’s Dino Zoff in an elite group of goalkeepers over 40 to achieve that feat.
A Free Transfer Opportunity
The financial appeal is undeniable. With Vozinha available for no transfer fee, Inter Miami view the move as a market opportunity too good to pass up. The club are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department, and the Cape Verdean’s experience – honed across years in Portuguese football – makes him an attractive low-cost option.
Competition from Brazil
However, the deal is far from done. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, two Brazilian Serie B clubs have emerged as serious contenders, threatening to hijack the move. Avaí and Atlético Goianiense are reportedly the frontrunners among a host of second-division Brazilian sides showing interest. For now, no agreement has been finalised with any club.
A Reunion in the Making?
If Inter Miami can fend off the Brazilian competition, Vozinha would join a star-studded locker room headlined by Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. For a player who almost quit football before the World Cup, it would be the crowning chapter of an extraordinary career.
For now, the “Spider-Man” of Cape Verde – as he has been nicknamed for his remarkable reflexes – stands at a crossroads. The world awaits his next move.
