Former England striker Ian Wright has fired a defiant warning ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final, declaring that Thomas Tuchel’s side will “block and break” Argentina to reach their first final in 60 years.

The ex-Arsenal icon, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, did not hold back when assessing England’s chances against the reigning world champions. “I think we will beat Argentina,” Wright said. “The way they play and how narrow they are. I think we are going to block them and break them”.

Wright’s confidence stems from a tactical assessment of Lionel Scaloni’s side, pointing to defensive vulnerabilities England can exploit. He also suggested Argentina do not command the same fear as other remaining contenders. “If we get to a France or a Spain, I think the level goes to another place entirely,” he explained. “But I don’t fear Argentina like I’d fear France or Spain, because I think there are a lot of fallacies with them”.

Neville Doubles Down

Wright’s verdict was echoed by former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, who predicted England’s attacking firepower would prove decisive. “With the centre backs they have, I can’t see us not scoring at least two goals,” Neville said. “We’re faster, quicker, we’ve got a better squad”.

Neville also cast doubt on Argentina’s overall quality compared to their 2022 vintage. “It’s not a vintage Argentina, by any stretch – it’s not as good as the Argentina side from four years ago, but it’s still got danger, of course, because they’ve got Messi and an unbelievable spirit”.

Argentina Press Hits Back

The comments have sparked fury in Buenos Aires, where sections of the Argentine media accused England of “downplaying” the three-time world champions. The front page of Buenos Aires-based publication Olé read: “England is downplaying us – respect the pecking order”.

The fixture, the first competitive meeting between the nations since the 2002 World Cup, is steeped in decades of history – from Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” in 1986 to David Beckham’s red card in 1998.

Tuchel’s Men in Form

England booked their semi-final spot after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway, with Jude Bellingham scoring a brace. Argentina progressed by edging Switzerland 3-1 after extra time.

Now, with a place in Sunday’s final against either France or Spain on the line, Wright’s bold prediction has set the stage for what promises to be a explosive showdown in Atlanta.

“I can feel it in my bones,” Wright added. England fans will be hoping he is right.
