Spain’s 3-0 demolition of Austria in Thursday’s World Cup round-of-32 clash at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles was not merely a statement of intent from the reigning European champions—it was a night of genuine football history.

With the starting whistle, 18-year-old Lamine Yamal and 19-year-old Pau Cubarsí etched their names into the tournament’s record books. According to Opta, they became the first pair of teenagers to start a World Cup knockout match for the same team since the legendary Brazilian duo of Pelé (17) and José Altafini (19) lined up together against Wales in the 1958 quarter-finals. Spain is now only the second nation in World Cup history to field two under-20 players in a knockout-stage match.

Barcelona Reunion Powers La Roja

The two Barcelona prodigies, who came through the club’s famed La Masia academy together, were instrumental in Spain’s dominant display. Yamal, fully recovered from a recent hamstring injury, played 85 minutes—his longest outing of the tournament so far—and was a constant menace. He forced Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager into an early save inside the opening minute, completed six shots (four on target), created two scoring chances, and registered five successful ball recoveries, earning him the Player of the Match award. Though he ended the night without a goal or assist, every dangerous Spanish attack bore his mark.

Cubarsí, meanwhile, anchored the defence alongside Aymeric Laporte and has now played every single minute of Spain’s campaign.

Oyarzabal Double Ends 16-Year Knockout Drought

Mikel Oyarzabal stole the scoring headlines with a first-half opener in the 36th minute, finishing from Marc Cucurella’s drilled cross. Pedro Porro doubled the lead in the 66th minute with a powerful header—his maiden international goal—before Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute to seal a convincing victory.

The result marked Spain’s first knockout-stage win at a World Cup since lifting the trophy in 2010, ending a drought that had stretched 16 years.

Echoes of 1958

The historical parallel with 1958 carries extra weight. On that day in Sweden, a 17-year-old Pelé scored the only goal in Brazil’s 1-0 quarter-final victory over Wales—his country’s first step toward their maiden world title.

Now, 68 years later, Yamal and Cubarsí have guided Spain into the round of 16, where they will face either Portugal or Croatia. “The World Cup starts now,” Yamal declared after the match. “In the knockout stage, if you lose, you go home. We don’t want to go home—no one here does.”
