Hearts of Oak Managing Director Julius Ben Emunah has launched a passionate defence of Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, hitting back at critics who have questioned the shot-stopper’s performances at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a strongly-worded statement, Emunah compared Asare’s record with those of Ghana’s previous World Cup goalkeepers, arguing that the Hearts of Oak glovesman deserves recognition rather than ridicule for his displays in the United States.

Historical Comparisons

“Richard Kingston conceded three goals in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup. He went on to concede twice in 2010 with by far the best defensive setup we have gone to the World Cup with,” Emunah wrote.

He continued: “Fatau Dauda conceded six goals in two games, Adam Larsen Kwarasey conceded one in one game at the 2014 edition, while Lawrence Ati Zigi conceded seven goals in three matches in 2022.”

Emunah argued that Asare’s record stands tall against these benchmarks. The 33-year-old has conceded just twice in three group-stage matches against Panama, England, and Croatia—a feat made all the more impressive given the defensive personnel at his disposal.

“It is only a dumb football analyst who will discredit someone who has managed this relatively weak defensive setup by conceding twice in three matches,” Emunah asserted.

Defensive Leadership and Modern Goalkeeping

The Hearts of Oak MD also took aim at those who fail to recognise the evolving role of goalkeepers in modern football.

“Your failure to even appreciate the defensive leadership role of a goalkeeper in modern-day football approach tells a lot,” he said. “But this is the new Ghana where anyone wakes up and wants to trend with comical criticisms and negativity.”

A Historic Campaign

Asare’s World Cup journey has been nothing short of remarkable. He became the first home-based goalkeeper to ever feature in a World Cup match for Ghana when he replaced the injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi during the second half of the opening fixture against Panama. Since then, he has not looked back.

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper recorded back-to-back clean sheets against Panama and England, becoming only the second Ghanaian goalkeeper—after Richard Kingson—to achieve two World Cup clean sheets. Against England alone, he faced 19 shots and made six saves, the most by any goalkeeper without conceding at the 2026 tournament.

His performances have earned him an 8/10 rating from analysts, with many describing him as Ghana’s standout performer of the group stage.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Stage

Asare’s rise is the stuff of football fairytales. A career-threatening broken leg in 2021 kept him sidelined for 18 months, and he was even advised to retire. Before his breakthrough, he worked as a bus conductor and took public transport to training, scraping a living from the game.

He earned his maiden national team call-up in March 2025 at age 32 and kept five clean sheets in six World Cup qualifiers before adding two more at the finals.

Final Warning to Detractors

Emunah concluded with a stern warning to those seeking to undermine the goalkeeper’s achievements.

“We are not going to tolerate these low-class hateful and dumb football analyses anyhow. Any agenda will be crushed in equal measure. Benjamin Asare stands tall,” he declared.

With Ghana securing a place in the Round of 32, Asare will have further opportunities to silence his doubters and add to his growing legacy on football’s biggest stage.
