Pep Guardiola has offered a deeply personal reflection on his ten-year reign at Manchester City, revealing that the driving force behind his legendary spell was a burning desire to silence critics who dismissed his Barcelona success as merely a product of Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andrés Iniesta.

In a candid interview, the 56-year-old Catalan coach explained that those doubts became the fuel for his journey to England.

‘You’re Right. Fine.’

“When I was in Germany, many people said my success was only because of Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta,” Guardiola recalled. “So I said, ‘You’re right. Fine.’ Then they said, ‘You won’t be able to do it in England.’ I replied, ‘Okay, that’s the challenge.'”

At Bayern Munich, he won three consecutive Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokals—yet the narrative persisted. The ultimate test lay in the Premier League.

A Decade of Dominance

Guardiola took over Manchester City in 2016, when the club was dismissed by many as “wealthy but soulless”. Over ten years, he built an unprecedented “Blue Moon dynasty”, delivering six Premier League titles—including an unprecedented four-peat from 2021 to 2024—alongside one Champions League, three FA Cups, four League Cups, and other honours, totalling 20 trophies.

His tactical revolution transformed English football, popularising ball-playing goalkeepers, inverted full-backs, and building from the back.

Why Ten Years Was Enough

“And when I felt I had proved them wrong, that was one of the reasons I believed ten years at Man City was enough,” Guardiola said. “I achieved what I wanted to prove. Now I need to refresh my mind, my body, and the way I think.”

His departure, confirmed in May 2026, came despite a contract running until 2027. Guardiola admitted the decision was not sudden but a gradual realisation: “I felt I didn’t have the energy to maintain the highest level, nor the motivation to face the immense demands of a game every three days”.

He now plans to split his time between Barcelona and possibly the Middle East, prioritising family and addressing back issues. Yet he left the door open: “If I miss football and someone needs me, I’ll come back”.

A Legacy Beyond Trophies

Guardiola’s City tenure is widely regarded as one of the most influential in football history. Former Barcelona teammate Xavi believes his next chapter lies in international management.

For now, Guardiola is content: “I’m 56. My ambition hasn’t changed—just the rhythm”.
