The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has once again demonstrated its resilience, closing August 2026 with remarkable year-to-date returns that have solidified its position as one of Africa’s leading equity markets. Despite a notable divergence in individual stock performances—where losses outpaced gains—the bourse’s benchmark indices recorded exceptional growth, driven by robust trading activity and improving macroeconomic conditions .

Benchmark Indices Show Unprecedented Growth

According to the GSE Monthly Summary for August 2026, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) recorded a return of 71.90%, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) delivered a return of 70.09% . This performance extends a historic rally observed throughout the year, positioning the Accra bourse as the best-performing stock market in Africa, and among the top globally . Notably, this feat has been achieved despite the recent fluctuation of the Ghana Cedi, which has depreciated by roughly 7% against the US dollar .

The rally has been significantly bolstered by a sharp decline in inflation, which has fallen from 54.1% to 3.4% over the past year, and a stabilization of interest rates, prompting investors to shift capital from fixed-income instruments to equities . Financial stocks, including major banks, have been key drivers of this growth, supported by resilient profitability and improved asset quality within the sector .

Trading Activity Surges as Retail Participation Doubles

Market liquidity continued to gain momentum in August. The GSE recorded 133,867 transactions, representing a 323.86% increase compared to the same period in the previous year . This surge in activity reflects a fundamental shift in the market, with retail investor participation rising dramatically. The GSE Managing Director, Abena Amoah, recently noted that monthly trades have jumped from approximately 25,000 to 300,000, indicating that “the market has shifted” .

A Market of Contrasts: Gainers vs. Losers

Despite the bullish overall trend, the market presented a mixed picture in August, with 10 price gainers and 16 price losers for the month .

Top Price Gainers:

· Dannex Ayrton Starwin PLC: 313.6%
· Digicut Production & Advertising PLC: 211.1%
· Hords PLC: 125.6%
· Unilever Ghana PLC: 35.6%
· Clydestone (Ghana) PLC: 25.9%
· Cocoa Processing Co. PLC: 17.6%

Notable Price Losers:

· Enterprise Group PLC: -33.1%
· Atlantic Lithium Ltd.: -15.2%
· Societe Generale Ghana PLC: -12.1%
· Cal Bank PLC: -11.4%
· Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC: -10.2%

Industry analysts suggest that while the upward trend remains strong, investors are becoming increasingly selective following the sharp gains recorded earlier in the year .

Fixed Income Market Rebounds Strongly

The Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) also closed the month on a high note, with a volume of 48.99 billion traded, reflecting a 104.77% increase year-on-year . Treasury Bills accounted for 45.98% of the total volume, while Government Notes and Bonds contributed 52.77%, with Corporate Bonds making up the remaining 1.25% .

This performance highlights a broader recovery in Ghana’s capital markets. Recent listings, such as PETROSOL’s GH¢100 million bond and the successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) by Kasapreko PLC, have injected fresh energy into the primary market . With over GH¢120 billion in pension fund assets available, the GSE is actively positioning itself as a premier avenue for businesses to raise capital and for investors to secure returns .
