Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) has announced that it expects monthly production to surge to approximately 700,000 tonnes in August 2026, driven by improving weather conditions and the phased commissioning of new heavy mining equipment. The projected output marks a significant rebound from the production slowdown experienced during the peak rainy season and brings the company closer to its annual target of eight million tonnes.

Recovery from Rainy Season Disruptions

In a statement issued on Monday, the Nsuta-based mining firm explained that heavy rainfall between May and July severely hampered haulage operations and processing activities at its open-pit mine in the Western Region. The adverse weather led to reduced shipments and a temporary dip in production levels. However, with rainfall now easing in August, mining conditions have improved substantially, allowing operations to ramp up.

New Equipment Drives Efficiency

The production boost is also being supported by the gradual deployment of newly commissioned heavy-duty mining equipment. GMC says these machines are designed to enhance operational efficiency, reduce downtime, and increase ore extraction rates—critical factors in meeting the ambitious monthly target.

Strategic Importance in Global Markets

GMC, Ghana’s sole producer and exporter of manganese ore, supplies the global steel industry, which remains the primary consumer of manganese. However, the company highlighted a growing secondary market: high-grade carbonate manganese ore is increasingly in demand for the battery value chain, particularly for clean energy technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems. This diversification positions GMC to benefit from the global energy transition.

Supporting Ghana’s Value-Addition Agenda

Beyond raw ore exports, GMC reiterated its commitment to Ghana’s industrialisation push, specifically the proposed establishment of a manganese refinery. Such a facility would process locally mined ore into higher-value products, creating jobs, retaining more revenue, and reducing reliance on raw commodity exports. The company said it remains engaged with government stakeholders to advance this project.

Outlook for the Rest of 2026

Looking ahead, GMC says it will continue to monitor weather patterns while optimising its expanded fleet to sustain higher production levels through the second half of the year. Achieving the 700,000-tonne monthly average would put the company firmly on track to meet its eight-million-tonne annual target—a milestone that would reinforce Ghana’s position as a key player in the global manganese market.

Economic Implications

A strong production year for GMC carries broader economic benefits, including increased export revenues, foreign exchange earnings, and sustained employment for thousands of workers in the Western Region. As the cedi faces pressure and the government seeks to diversify export earnings, GMC’s performance offers a welcome boost to Ghana’s minerals sector.
