FIFA President Infantino poses with Egypt flag hours after controversial elimination —A gesture of solidarity or provocation

Just hours after Egypt’s dramatic and bitterly disputed exit from the World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino appeared in the stands at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, grinning broadly as he held aloft the Egyptian national flag.

The image, which spread like wildfire across social media, was captured during the Round of 16 match between Switzerland and Colombia on Tuesday evening. A group of fans in the stands handed the flag to Infantino, who readily accepted it, posed for multiple photographs, and flashed a thumbs-up.

A Bitter Elimination Still Fresh

The timing could scarcely have been more charged. Only hours earlier, Egypt had suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Argentina in Atlanta – a match in which the Pharaohs had led 2-0 before succumbing to a Lionel Messi-inspired comeback.

The Egyptian delegation reacted with fury. Coach Hossam Hassan openly accused FIFA of wanting to keep Messi in the tournament for “commercial reasons”. Striker Mostafa Ziko, who had a goal controversially disallowed, declared: “The tournament is rigged from the start”. The Egyptians lodged complaints over three key decisions, including the disallowed goal, a possible penalty on Mohamed Salah, and a dubious foul called against Salah when he was through on goal.

A Rare and Unsettling Image

Infantino’s decision to pose with the Egyptian flag was widely described as “unusual” – a scene rarely witnessed in football stadiums. Some fans interpreted the gesture as a sign of goodwill toward the African nation. Others saw it as a tone-deaf response to a team still reeling from what they perceived as an injustice.

The FIFA president offered no public explanation. But the image – a smiling Infantino clutching the flag of a team whose players had just accused his organisation of engineering their elimination – spoke louder than any statement could.

Switzerland, meanwhile, advanced to the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout victory over Colombia. They will now face Argentina – the very team at the centre of the controversy – in Kansas City on Sunday.

For Egypt, the World Cup is over. But the debate over what happened in Atlanta – and what Infantino’s flag-waving in Vancouver truly meant – is only just beginning.
