The incident occurred while the equipment was en route to the team’s designated training hub at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, with the theft discovered just before the players’ arrival on Saturday. The shipment, sent ahead of the team, contained the tools for Thomas Tuchel’s meticulous training regimen, including analytical equipment, tactical whiteboards and even massage tables.
Custom boots for key players, which are often tailored to an individual’s precise specifications and playing style, are among the most integral pieces of kit for any footballer. The team has been left with a single ball, severely hampering their ability to conduct a full training session. The Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) has launched a full investigation into the “possible theft of equipment from a team vehicle”. Officers were on site at Swope Soccer Village on Friday night, and police have confirmed that two suspects have been taken into custody pending further investigation.
The theft represents a significant security breach for the FA, coming as the team looks to build on positive momentum following friendly victories against New Zealand and Costa Rica. With just days until their crucial Group L opener against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday, the FA and team sponsor Nike have mobilized an emergency response to ensure the players are able to train properly.
English journalist Craig Hope reports that the focus is now on damage limitation to ensure the team’s tournament ambitions are not derailed. Security personnel are reportedly investigating all possibilities, including whether drivers trusted to deliver the goods may have been involved.
Despite the setback, the England squad has now arrived at their camp and is attempting to focus on their upcoming match. Meanwhile, the investigation by Kansas City police remains ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the robbery.
