Edward Furlong—the former child star who rocketed to fame as John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day—was seen casually strolling through Los Angeles on Friday, just two days before his 49th birthday. The actor, dressed in a black crew-neck T-shirt, aviator sunglasses, and textured brown trousers, stopped by a grocery store and grabbed tacos from a street vendor, offering a rare glimpse of his sober, low-key life.

The sighting comes after Furlong was forced to cancel his scheduled appearance at Melbourne Metro Comic Con on July 18–19, where he was set to reunite with Terminator co-star Linda Hamilton, 69. Organizers announced the day before the event that Furlong “was unable to make his flight” due to “unforeseen circumstances,” adding that no alternative routing could get him to Australia in time. They stressed he was “extremely disappointed” and had assured fans he would visit “in the near future.”

Furlong’s career trajectory has been one of Hollywood’s most cautionary tales. Plucked from obscurity at 13 with no acting credits, he delivered a breakout performance in James Cameron’s 1991 blockbuster, earning critical praise and a Saturn Award. He followed with acclaimed roles in American History X (1998) and Detroit Rock City, but by 2000, addiction had taken hold. He entered rehab for the first time that year, beginning a two-decade battle with crystal meth and alcohol that included multiple relapses, arrests, and a 2004 mugshot that shocked fans. Prolonged substance abuse left his teeth severely decayed, and public appearances often drew concern.

Yet in recent years, Furlong has staged a quiet turnaround. In a 2024 interview with Daily Mail, he detailed his sobriety and renewed passion for acting, calling it his “second chance.” He has since appeared in The Forest Hills and Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep, saying, “It feels great to be back on set and sober too.” He also acknowledged that agreeing to get dental veneers in 2022—after years of reluctance—was a pivotal step in rebuilding his confidence.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Furlong’s representatives for comment on his current status and the missed convention, but has yet to receive a response. Fans, meanwhile, have taken to social media with a mix of encouragement and cautious optimism, as the actor approaches his birthday with his health and career seemingly on firmer ground than they have been in years.
