France manager Didier Deschamps walked off the pitch for the final time on Saturday, bringing a historic 14-year chapter to a close after his side’s thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the 2026 World Cup third-place play-off. Yet beyond the scoreline in Doha, the numbers he leaves behind tell the story of the most successful managerial era in French football history.

Appointed in July 2012 after succeeding Laurent Blanc, Deschamps took charge of Les Bleus for 185 matches—more than any other manager in the country’s history. The numbers are extraordinary: 120 wins, 35 draws, and just 30 defeats, translating to a win rate of nearly 65%. His teams scored 418 goals and conceded 176, forging a reputation for tactical pragmatism paired with devastating counter-attacking firepower.

His trophy cabinet shines as brightly as any in international football. The crowning achievement came in 2018, when France lifted the FIFA World Cup in Russia—a tournament where his squad blend of youthful exuberance and defensive steel swept aside all comers. That triumph made him only the third man in history to win the World Cup as both player (1998) and manager, joining Brazil’s Mário Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.

Four years later, in 2022, he came agonizingly close to repeating the feat, guiding France to the final in Qatar before falling to Argentina in a penalty shootout after a dramatic 3-3 draw. He also led France to the UEFA Nations League title in 2021, added a third-place finish in the 2025 Nations League, and steered his side to the Euro 2016 final on home soil—a heartbreaking extra-time loss to Portugal that remains one of his few regrets.

Across his tenure, Deschamps handed debuts to over 70 players, transforming a squad fractured by internal disputes into a unified powerhouse. He navigated the transition from the Thierry Henry and Franck Ribéry generations to the Kylian Mbappé era, all while weathering controversies, injuries, and the weight of a nation’s expectations.

“The numbers speak for themselves, but they cannot measure the man,” said French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo in a farewell statement. “Didier gave everything—his time, his energy, and his soul—to this jersey. He leaves us with a legacy of excellence and a blueprint for success that will endure for generations.”

Speaking after the match, a visibly moved Deschamps reflected on the scale of his journey: “It is the end of something beautiful. I hear a lot of thank-yous, but I am the one who should be thanking everyone—my staff, my players, and all the French people who supported us through every high and every low.”

Captains past and present paid homage. Kylian Mbappé, who scored a hat-trick in the final match, posted: “We wanted to give him a fairy-tale ending, but football didn’t allow it. Still, his place in history is forever secure. Thank you, coach, for everything you taught us about what this shirt means.”

Deschamps leaves with more wins than any French manager in history—120 victories, representing 65% of all matches contested. His 30 losses mean he averaged just over two defeats per year across a decade and a half. No other French boss has come close to that level of consistency at the highest level.

As he steps away at the age of 57, speculation will immediately turn to his successor. But for one night, the focus remains on the man who restored French football’s pride, turned a generation of talent into world champions, and wore that blue jersey—as player and coach—for a remarkable 25 years.

“Nothing is more beautiful in a footballer’s life than this shirt,” he said, his voice steady. “I wore it for two decades and a half. And I will carry it in my heart for the rest of my life.”
