Cape Verde national team goalkeeper Vozinha has waded into football’s most enduring debate, naming Lionel Messi as the greatest player of all time — a declaration he acknowledged might not sit well with Portuguese fans, given his country’s close ties to the European nation.

In a candid interview with local media, the 38-year-old shot-stopper was asked the inevitable question: “Messi or Cristiano?” His answer was measured but unequivocal.

“For me, Messi is an exceptional player, incomparable,” Vozinha said. “If I had to choose the greatest player, it would be Messi.”

When the reporter noted that “a lot of Portuguese people will be angry when they hear that,” Vozinha quickly clarified his position, praising Ronaldo’s extraordinary discipline while still holding firm to his preference. “Cristiano Ronaldo is a machine. He’s the greatest example of discipline, of professionalism, of what hard work can achieve,” he added. “But for me, Messi is a unique player, with no equal.”

A goalkeeper with deep ties to Portuguese football

Vozinha, whose full name is Josimar Dias, has spent the majority of his club career in Portugal, representing clubs including Farense, Olhanense and most recently Lusitânia, where he continues to play at the age of 38. He has been a stalwart for the Cape Verde national team since 2009, earning over 50 caps and helping the Blue Sharks reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals in 2013 and 2021.

His extensive experience in the Portuguese league system has given him a front-row seat to Ronaldo’s legacy, yet he remains unmoved by the cultural pressures that often push Cape Verdean players to favour the Portuguese icon. Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony, maintains deep linguistic and footballing ties with its former ruler, and Ronaldo is revered across the archipelago.

The statistics behind his choice

Vozinha’s preference for Messi is grounded in the Argentine’s all-round genius. Messi, now 39 and still dazzling for Inter Miami, has won a record eight Ballon d’Or titles, led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, and amassed over 800 career goals — many of which have been celebrated for their artistry as much as their frequency.

Ronaldo, 40, currently plying his trade with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has five Ballon d’Or wins, five Champions League titles and a European Championship trophy with Portugal. He remains football’s all-time leading goalscorer with over 900 official goals — a testament to his unprecedented longevity and relentless work ethic.

Yet for Vozinha, the distinction lies not in numbers but in the intangible. “Messi does things that nobody else can do — not even Cristiano,” he elaborated. “You can train to be like Cristiano. You cannot train to be like Messi. He was born with that gift.”

A sensitive subject in Lusophone Africa

The Messi-Ronaldo debate carries particular weight in Portuguese-speaking Africa, where Ronaldo is often viewed as a regional hero. Many Cape Verdean, Angolan and Mozambican fans adopt Portugal as their second national team, and Ronaldo’s achievements are celebrated with genuine pride. Vozinha’s comments have already sparked debate on social media, with some fans praising his honesty and others accusing him of disrespecting the Portuguese legend.

“People will say I should choose Cristiano because I play in Portugal, because I speak Portuguese, because Cape Verde is close to Portugal,” Vozinha said. “But football is universal. I can appreciate Cristiano’s greatness and still believe Messi is better. That is not disrespect. That is opinion.”

Teammates and coaches weigh in

Teammates of Vozinha in the Cape Verde camp have largely rallied around him, with captain Bebé — himself a former Manchester United and Real Madrid Castilla player — noting that “everyone is entitled to their opinion.” Head coach Rui Águas, a Portuguese-born manager who has led the Blue Sharks since 2022, diplomatically sidestepped the controversy, saying, “Both players have given us unforgettable moments. We are lucky to have witnessed them both.”

The debate continues

As Messi and Ronaldo enter the twilight of their careers, the debate over who is the greatest shows no signs of abating. For Vozinha, the choice is clear — even if it costs him a few admirers in Lisbon. “I’m not afraid of the reaction,” he concluded with a smile. “I’m a goalkeeper. I’m used to taking risks.”
