Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko have appointed former South Africa captain and highly experienced tactician Eric Tinkler as their new head coach, the club confirmed on Friday, July 17.

The 55-year-old takes charge with immediate effect, tasked with restoring the Porcupine Warriors to their former glory after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that saw them finish eighth in the Ghana Premier League.

A Wealth of Experience

Tinkler arrives in Kumasi with more than 30 years of elite football experience, having managed some of the biggest institutions in South African football. His coaching career includes spells at Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City, SuperSport United, Chippa United, Maritzburg United, Bidvest Wits, and most recently Sekhukhune United.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder, who earned 45 international caps, brings a decorated trophy cabinet to the role. He has won three major trophies during his coaching career: the Nedbank Cup with Orlando Pirates in the 2013/14 season, the Telkom Knockout (League Cup) with Cape Town City in 2016, and the MTN8 with SuperSport United in the 2017/18 campaign.

Continental Pedigree

Beyond domestic success, Tinkler boasts valuable experience on the African continental stage. He guided Orlando Pirates to the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2015, where they narrowly lost 2-1 on aggregate to Étoile du Sahel. He also reached the CAF Champions League final with Pirates and the CAF Confederation Cup final with SuperSport United.

That continental expertise will be crucial for Kotoko, two-time CAF Champions League winners who lifted the trophy in 1970 and 1983 but have struggled to recapture that form in recent years.

The Menzo Connection

The driving force behind Tinkler’s move to Ghana is reportedly Stanley Menzo, the former Netherlands international and Ajax Cape Town coach who was recently appointed as Kotoko’s Director of Football. Menzo, tasked with overseeing the club’s technical direction and long-term football strategy, is believed to have played a key role in luring Tinkler to Kumasi.

A New Era Begins

Tinkler’s appointment ends Kotoko’s search for a permanent manager following the departure of Abdul Karim Zito in March. Interim coaches Prince Yaw Owusu and later Hamza Obeng had overseen the team during the transition period.

The move marks Tinkler’s first overseas coaching appointment, presenting him with a fresh challenge at one of Africa’s most successful and passionately supported clubs.

“I am honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions,” Tinkler said upon his appointment. “Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success and ambition for development is not hidden in Africa. I look forward to working with the players, staff, and management to build a team that can compete and win, both at home and on the continental stage. I feel proud to be associated with this great club at this historical moment”.

High Expectations

The Porcupine Warriors are Ghana’s record champions with 25 league titles, but last won the Premier League in 2021/22. After finishing eighth in the 2025/26 season — a performance the club’s board described as “disappointing and below the standards and expectations of the club” — the appointment of a coach of Tinkler’s calibre signals a clear statement of intent.

With Tinkler expected to begin work immediately, overseeing preseason preparations and assessing the current squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, Kotoko fans will be hoping the South African tactician can bring stability, experience, and a winning mentality back to the club.

Asante Kotoko are two-time CAF Champions League winners and Ghana’s most successful club with 25 league titles.
