For 84 minutes, Argentina’s World Cup dream was slipping away. England led 1-0. The defending champions had 11 minutes of regulation time left — plus whatever stoppage time fate would grant them — to save their campaign.

Then, in a blur of genius and defiance, Lionel Scaloni’s men did what they have done all tournament: they refused to break. Enzo Fernández lashed home a stunning equalizer from 25 yards in the 85th minute. Seven minutes later, deep into stoppage time, Lionel Messi curled a devastating cross toward the far post, and substitute Lautaro Martínez rose above the England defense to power a header past Jordan Pickford. Final score: Argentina 2, England 1. Argentina had reached a second consecutive World Cup final.

After the final whistle, Scaloni stood before the media, still processing the magnitude of what his team had just accomplished.

“Just as we were losing and about to head home, the team showed all its skill and all its potential,” Scaloni said, his voice carrying the weight of the moment. “This is what we’re striving for. The shirt demands it. I dedicate this to the people of Argentina.”

The victory extended a remarkable run for Scaloni’s Argentina. They have now reached the semi-finals in each of their last five major tournaments, winning the World Cup in Qatar 2022, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, and never failing to advance past the last four since Scaloni took over in 2018. Now they stand one win away from becoming the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.

England had taken the lead early in the second half through Anthony Gordon, finishing from Morgan Rogers’ cross. For much of the remainder, Thomas Tuchel’s men sat deep, inviting Argentina forward and hoping to protect their slender advantage. It proved fatal. Argentina, who had already survived a round-of-32 scare against Cape Verde and come from two goals down with 11 minutes left to beat Egypt in the last 16, found yet another gear.

Scaloni has spoken all tournament about his team’s unyielding spirit. After the Egypt comeback, he told reporters that if his side were to be eliminated, he would rather they go down showing courage than caution. Against England, that philosophy was vindicated in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

The final whistle triggered a swarm of celebration — Messi dropping to his knees, fists trembling, before being engulfed by teammates. For England, there was only disbelief. Jude Bellingham was involved in a post-match melee as emotions boiled over. Tuchel, only the third foreign manager in England’s history, now faces intense scrutiny for his defensive approach after his team surrendered a lead so late.

Spain awaits Argentina in the final on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Spanish, who knocked out France 2-0 in the other semi-final, will pose a formidable challenge. But Scaloni’s Argentina have proven, time and again, that they are never more dangerous than when their backs are against the wall.

“Desire and ambition we have in abundance,” Scaloni had said on the eve of the match. Against England, his players delivered both — and then some. Now, one more performance stands between them and immortality.
