America’s wealthiest dynasties have never been wealthier. On Monday, Forbes published its second-ever ranking of the nation’s “Decabillionaire” families—multi-generational clans worth at least $10 billion each—and the numbers are staggering.

The 2026 list features 54 families with a combined net worth of $1.9 trillion, a nearly $600 billion increase from the inaugural ranking in February 2024, when just 45 families qualified. Five of these dynasties are now in their fourth generation of fortune, while the Du Pont family—ranked at No. 19—spans more than nine generations. Ten families made their debut on the list this year, and only one dropped out: Houston-based Westlake Corporation’s Chao clan, whose estimated $9.3 billion fortune narrowly missed the cutoff.

The Waltons: A Half-Trillion-Dollar Dynasty

Topping the list—by an almost unimaginable margin—is the Walton family, heirs to the Walmart empire founded by Sam Walton (d. 1992) and his brother Bud Walton (d. 1995). The family’s fortune has nearly doubled since February 2024, surging by an estimated 520 billion.

The Waltons are now more than three times as wealthy as America’s second-richest clan. Their combined wealth is second only to Elon Musk, who became the world’s first trillionaire in June and is now worth an estimated $997 billion.

Most of the Walton fortune comes from their stake in Walmart. Forbes estimates the family owns nearly 39% of the retail giant through two holding companies—a stake worth $359 billion as of June 22, when the ranking was locked in. That accounts for roughly four-fifths of the estimated $463 billion net worth of Sam Walton’s side of the family. An additional 6% stake, worth $51.3 billion, is held in charitable trusts in the name of John Walton (d. 2005). Bud Walton’s side of the family is worth an estimated $57 billion, including a nearly 3% stake in Walmart and the fortune of Ann Walton Kroenke’s husband, sports mogul Stan Kroenke.

Walmart’s Trillion-Dollar Milestone

The Walton family’s stunning wealth surge is directly tied to Walmart’s historic stock performance. On February 3, 2026, Walmart became the first brick-and-mortar retailer to achieve a $1 trillion market capitalization—a milestone historically reserved for Big Tech giants like Nvidia and Alphabet. Shares climbed nearly 3% to close at a record $127.71, comfortably clearing the $125.47 mark required to hit the thirteen-figure valuation.

The stock had surged more than 28% over the prior year and more than 14% year-to-date in 2026, driven by Walmart’s aggressive push into e-commerce, advertising, and artificial intelligence. While the stock has since cooled from its all-time high of $134.20 reached on May 19, 2026, it has still more than doubled over the past two-and-a-half years.

The Rest of the Top 10

Rank Family Source Net Worth
1 Walton Walmart $520B
2 Koch Koch, Inc. $157B
3 Mars Mars, Inc. $129B
4 (Edward) Johnson Fidelity $69.5B
5 Cargill-MacMillan Cargill Inc. $67.9B
6 Pritzker Hyatt Hotels, diversified $53.2B
7 Duncan Pipelines $43B
8 Cathy Chick-fil-A $40.2B
9 S.C. Johnson Cleaning products $39B
10 Cox Media $31B

Newcomers and Notable Dynasties

Ten families joined the decabillionaire club in 2026. Among them: the Richards family of Carrollton, Georgia, behind cable and wire manufacturer Southwire (worth 12.8 billion); and the Lockton family of Kansas City, Missouri, behind insurance brokerage Lockton ($10 billion).

A New Era of Concentrated Wealth

The 2026 Forbes ranking paints a vivid picture of America’s widening wealth concentration at the very top. With a combined $1.9 trillion, these 54 families now control fortunes that rival the GDP of entire nations. And at the summit, the Waltons stand alone—a half-trillion-dollar testament to the enduring power of retail, reinvention, and one family’s decision to hold onto their shares.

This story is based on Forbes’ 2026 Decabillionaire Families ranking, published July 4, 2026.
