Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has issued a sharp warning to his squad, urging absolute vigilance as they prepare to face Cape Verde in a crucial World Cup fixture. Despite entering the match as heavy favorites, Scaloni made it clear that his side cannot afford any complacency against the tournament’s surprise package.
Speaking to the media during the pre-match press conference, Scaloni pointed to Cape Verde’s remarkable resilience against some of the competition’s strongest sides. “Cape Verde are a good team, which has made things difficult for its three opponents at the World Cup. They are a tough opposition, who is going to make things difficult for us because they have already done it to Spain, which is one of the favourites, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia,” the Argentine tactician stated.
Scaloni’s caution is well-founded. Cape Verde have already showcased a fearless, high-energy approach that has frustrated some of the tournament’s elite. Their ability to secure positive results against European heavyweights Spain and South American powerhouses Uruguay has turned them into a legitimate dark horse, while their gritty display against Saudi Arabia underscores their tactical discipline.
Drawing on the broader trends observed in this edition of the World Cup, where so-called “smaller” nations have repeatedly upset established powers, Scaloni stressed that the game cannot be taken lightly. “For the things we are seeing in this World Cup, we have to be careful. It’s a fast, quality and good team,” he emphasized, specifically highlighting the African side’s lethal pace on the counter-attack and their technical efficiency in transition.
In response to the threat, the Albiceleste coaching staff has reportedly ramped up tactical drills in training, placing a heavy emphasis on defensive compactness and rapid recovery to nullify Cape Verde’s speedy attackers. Scaloni is expected to field his strongest available XI, but he has also urged his star-studded attacking line to remain patient against what is sure to be a packed, disciplined defensive block.
For Scaloni, the message is unequivocal: respect the opponent, stick to the game plan, and avoid the trap of underestimation. With a spot in the knockout rounds hanging in the balance, Argentina knows that anything less than a focused, professional performance could see the Cape Verdean side write the latest chapter of this tournament’s growing list of upsets.
